“It’s okay. I’ll rename you. No one has to live with an ugly name like that. Hmm, I’ll have to think on it, though.” Bouncing forward to put some distance between us, I continued. “So, your brother says you have some Norse antiques, yeah?”
It was time to get to business while Ebs was charming Ash. Well I hoped she was charming him and not scaring the crap out of the sweet guy.
“I do, but most of it is in a warehouse since not many people actually ask for items of that era. If you don’t find something you like here, I can show you what else I have.” He paused.
“Sure. Let’s see what you’ve got.” I hopped up and down in excitement. “We have been looking for stuff like this for so long. It is so rare that anyone has one, much less multiple items from the time of the Vikings.”
“Okay. Give me a minute to wrap a few things up.”
Tossing keys I didn’t even realize he’d had in his hands when I almost headbutted the counter, I grinned as he disappeared through the back door. He’d all but admitted he had what we were searching for, and we were here to do a job, not for me to be checking his ass out. Ebony looked to be having a grand time chatting up Ash, so I would leave her be and take one for the team, so to speak. Inching sideways, I touched the keys, and after checking that no one was watching, I released the magic that would deliver the karma this guy deserved for being a thief.
“What are you doing?”
My heart jumped to my throat, and I flipped around, my hand slapping hard across Ash’s chest. It landed over the pocket of the shirt he wore, and I felt the cluster of keys under the fabric. Whoopsies. I hadn’t turned my magic off before I touched them.
As soon as I righted myself, Ash grazed the spot I’d just zapped with his hand. “Ouch. Did you just stab me with your nail or something?”
I chuckled lamely. “Oh. Probably. These things are always getting in the way.” I held my fingers up and waved them in his face.
Dipping his fingers in the pocket, Ash confirmed my fears by pulling a set of keys out that I’d just loaded karma into. While he examined them in the palm of his hand and Ebony watched me suspiciously, I tried not to freak out.
Crap. Crappity crap crap.
More damn keys. At least with Bernie, I knew the keys he sat on the counter were for his business because he mentioned a warehouse plus many items that were connected to Thor.
But Ash?
Shrugging internally, I tried not to focus too much on what I might’ve done. I sure hoped they weren’t for his house or bar, because that would suck pretty hard if something happened to either of those places.
Whoopsies.
