“It figures I’d be missing out on the good part of this meeting.” Alex strode back in his office with a padded envelope tucked under his arm. “Do I get a hug too?” Smirking at his face, he pretended to be hurt when she swatted him.

“If you don’t need her, I’d like to have a walk through the room with Hazel so she can pick a room.” Amber looked at me with the hope of a two-year-old expecting a new toy.

“Go do your female things as long as I don’t have to sit for hours while my nails are painted.” Alex shivered, and I couldn’t help myself. I barked out a laugh.

“Our daughters did that to him when they were young.” Amber giggled, gazing adoringly at the burly guy.

“Before I forget, this came for you.” The Alpha shoved the envelope at me.

“For me?” Eying it like it’d bite me, I took a step back. “No one knows I’m here. I didn’t know I’d be here.”

Alex frowned at the package in his hands before stomping to his desk. Amber moved closer, tucking her arm at my elbow, and we watched him rip it open. When he shook it, a familiar thing fell on his desk with a solid thump. We all stared at it in silence, until Alex picked it up and turned it over in his fingers.

“Is this yours?” The book that caused all of the shit in my life looked so small in his large hand.

I swallowed the lump choking me. “Yes.” My croak rasped through my lips.

“Why are you looking at it like you’ve seen a ghost?” No wonder Alex was puzzled. He had no idea.

“Because it burned with the rest of the books in the library at dawn,” I admitted.

“Maybe it’s a sign, Hazel,” Amber muttered under her breath. “From what I understood, this book set your magic free.” She giggled at my surprise. “I watch videos on my phone too while waiting on something to finish baking. I read the comments about what happened to you. Maybe the book is not done with you yet.”

That’s what I was afraid of. How much more damage could it do? Tilting my head, I reached for it, plucking it out of Alex’s fingers. It didn’t blast me with light, nor did it try to rearrange my organs.

“Amber, you said you’d teach me control, right?”

“I did, yes.” The woman had a ready smile for anyone.

“Maybe we should start today.” I had no time to dwell in misery and self-pity. If they wanted my head on a spike, I’d be ready to bite their hands off before they touched me. All the time I’d wished for magic, I didn’t think it’d have me running for my life. Nonetheless, I had it now, and I would do anything to have it do my bidding.

As for the demons?

I guess Leviathan was very determined to get his claws on my grandmother’s soul.

He better be ready for a fight too, because he wouldn’t know what hit him when I got my hands on his demonic ass.

It was time for me to take my place in the world of magic.

Hecate help whoever stood in my way.
