Lucien

“We don’t have much time,” I growled the words like a beast but still followed my mate in search of the other female.

My mind was clawing at my skull, screaming for me to turn around, start running, and not stop until I was so far from everything, death itself to be unable to find me when the time came. At the same time, my very essence, along everything that made me who and what I am, whispered, Mate, Mine. Like a needle of a gramophone stuck and jumping to the same thing with no end in sight. It was driving me insane, and I wanted to find the nearest wall and start bashing my head until there was nothing but silence. What’s worse…

The whisper was louder than the scream.

“You think I don’t know that?” Viola muttered not missing a beat. “We have to find her. She just threw something at your head and almost knocked you out. Harmony.” She hissed with a hand cupped around her mouth.

“The witch was unconscious. If she is awake, there is still no need to whisper. She will find us.”

“Look at you, Mr. Sunshine. What would I do without your optimism in this life and death situation is beyond me.” her emerald eyes flashed in anger.

My dick punched the zipper of my pants.

If I did not die by magic in this cursed place, I would go from the case of blue balls, as the humans liked to call it.

It was a very rude awakening for the likes of me.

Shamelessly I tried to compel her a few times since I found her in the hallway, hoping she will succumb and follow me out of here. Each time her gaze would narrow, and my power would hit a brick wall. I was good at gathering information because the power of compulsion was more potent in me than anyone else still alive. If someone did not feel like sharing the information I needed, I simply made them tell me what I wanted to know. I was good enough for the most powerful king of my kind to use as a spy, yet her mind was a fortress to me. One I could not concur. I tried and tried throughout the night with nothing to show for.

In return…

I’ve never wanted anything more in my life.

“Harmony, get your ass here.” Viola finally gave up and shouted with her face tilted up toward the tall ceilings.

My nose twitched when I thought a familiar scent tickled under it, but it was fast replaced by my mate’s natural scent, and I forgot all about it. Staying close to her, I followed deeper through the open area heading toward the opposite side of the church. Tensed and ready to fight at any moment, I searched every corner and every shadow with a passing glance, making sure we are not cornered. My instincts were telling me that apart from my mate, her friend, the witch, and I, no other soul was inside the walls. A small part I usually never ignored was prodding at me that I was wrong. Having no evidence by smell or sight, I couldn’t be sure it’s true or just a new paranoia I’ve developed now that my mate was within reach.

Fate was a fucking bitch to shackle us with mates and, by default rendering us useless unable to use our brains.

Was it the same for her?

“You know your friend. Where would you go if you were in her place?” I had a feeling the female was not in an obvious place. If Melody and Viola were to go by, she would be a resourceful creature as well.

“I’d probably go to her room.” My mate’s eyes widened, and she threw herself at me, planting a smacking kiss on my cheek. “You are a genius.”

I gawked.

You could call me a fool, but every touch, every glance she aimed my way, the way she walked, or the tone of her voice, they did things to me I never thought possible. Speechless, I rushed after her disappearing form, fear gripping me when I lost sight of her around a band in the corridor. Moving faster, I pitched forward, tripping over something soft. Accidently in my haste, I kicked it as well and it thumped against the same wall I slammed into. I didn’t need to see it was Alto since it screeched loud enough to raise the dead.

“I’ll kill you, fucking cat.” Peeling myself off the plaster, I glared at the damn creature. “I should’ve skinned you long ago.”

“Who are you arguing with?” Viola darted within sight the leather bound book she was hugging to her chest raised high above her head. With a stern scowl, she looked like a goddess ready to slay her enemies.

“Alto.” If I could kill the fucker with my eyes, he would’ve breathed his last breath right there and then.

A burst of choked laughter came out of my mate, and she lowered the book.

“If I wasn’t shitless scared right now, this would be too cute.” She giggled, shaking her head.

“I am a vampire. There is nothing cute about me.” I had no idea why I felt the need to say those words.

“If you say so, Mr. Sunshine. Let’s go.” Her emerald eyes were twinkling, and she bit her lip in an attempt to prevent a smile.

It scrambled my brain completely.
