“No.” she darted on the other side of the room as far away from me as she possibly could.
“Listen to me…” shutting up abruptly, my head snapped to the side when the witch twitched her body on the floor.
I wasn’t sure I could fight her and win with my mate being present. If the witch got her hands on her, I’d have no other option but to stand down, and I had no doubt there will be many painful ways for her to show me I never should’ve challenged her before she killed me. I had to pick my battles as much as I wanted to tear into her fangs and claws lashing out.
“Viola, we…”
“No!” she cried out, curling in on herself. “You don’t understand. They…they are here because of me. I screwed up, okay?” sobs were ripped from her chest, and she buried her face in both hands.
“Melody is with my brother.” Her head snapped up, her wide gaze locking on me. “Let me take you to your friend, please.” We had no time for this, yet I stood unmoving.
“Harmony?” the hope in her emerald eyes shredded my chest better than any cursed magic wilder could.
“Moël will come for her, this I promise you. But we must go. Now.”
“Who?” a line bisected her forehead, and she looked at me like I’ve lost my mind. “And what do you mean Melody is with your brother? She would never leave us behind.”
“She didn’t. That is why I am here. Now, if you please.” I moved just an inch but stopped when she tensed, ready to bolt out of the room. “Viola.” Packing as much warning as I could in her name, I narrowed my glare at her.
“I don’t think so.” She darted for the open door.
Just as she moved, so did the witch. The magic wilder lifted off the floor, reaching her arm to snatch my mate as she was passing her. Something inside of me snapped, and I had Viola over my shoulder, my boots pounding down the long hallway. The female in my arms grabbed fistfuls of my shirt so she doesn’t bounce around too much, just as I heard the chanting coming from behind us. Doubling up my speed, I pushed as hard as my battered body would allow, and for the first time since the day I was born, I prayed.
The first magic blast hit before I could turn the corner.
