“Let him be.” Melody petted his arm, and just like that, the power that was lashing at me calmed down. It entirely disappeared from the room. “I know what his problem is.”

“Do share, little female. I cannot stand the suspense.” Knowing she despises being called little, I added extra emphases on it.

I should’ve known better.

“You are scared.” Matching my stance, she folded her arms over her chest, and although much shorter, I felt like she was staring down at me.

My mouth dried up.

“I do not fear anything, Muse, and we can test it any time you wish.”

“I do not fear anything.” Melody lowered her voice to match my own, mocking me. Moël snorted but coughed to cover it up, the asshole. “I never said you are afraid of everything, just…of love.”

I glared at her.

“Yup, I know I’m right.” She kept gloating. “You are shitless scared of feeling something, anything, for anyone. God forbid the mighty Lucien has feelings. Uuuuu…”

“Do not mock me, female.” But she already planted the seed, which was spreading through my brain like a virus. Could it be I was shying away from emotions? No, that could not be it. I had my brothers, and I cared more about their lives than I did for my own.

“If you are not going to save her, just say it so that we can do something.” Melody was not giving up. I couldn’t deal with that at the moment, so I focused on my youngest brother, although my mind was churning with everything my brother’s mate said.

“Do we have any new information on the Muses and which one of them the other females descend from?” but Moël was shaking his head before I was done talking.

“We can’t wait, Lucien.”

“We are not waiting, Melody. I just want more information before we poke the hornet’s nest. Your knowledge of magic users might not be vast, but the three of us know better. “

“Someone was coming at the Chalice to see me from what I could understand.” She swallowed tickly but squared her shoulders nonetheless. “If Seraphina doesn’t have me to show off, I’m sure she will do it with Viola or Harmony. She called him Phillipe.”

My eyes snapped to Étienne’s face, noting his skin blenched at the mention of that name. Moël became very still as well, his wide gaze darting from me to our oldest brother and back. I haven’t heard that name spoken ever since we left Paris. The face of the female with her expressive, soulful eyes floated at the forefront of my mind, and urgency stabbed me with a vengeance.

“I forgot about that,” Étienne muttered, but I wasn’t listening to him anymore.

“What does our uncle have to do with all of this?” Moël asked, yet the answer was already evident in the carefree mask he wore like an armor plastering on his face. Every time shit got real, he acted like it was all a joke to him.

“That’s what I’d like to know.” My feet were already moving as I ignored my brothers and Melody calling after me.

Phillipe was a sadistic bastard that will kill his own child if it meant more power for him. He wouldn’t think twice about killing a female if it meant him spreading his control. I had my suspicions that he had something to do with my father’s assassination when it happened, but I had no evidence or proof. If this was the same male working with the witch, it’d explain a lot of things. And the monster was headed straight for my mate. I’ve never moved that fast in my very long life.

And I was not afraid of feeling emotions.

I almost believed it, too.
