He was reaching for the front door, his hand thumping on it weakly.

“Vaser!” Hissing through numb lips, I hoped the demon wasn’t affected as bad as I was if he was further away from the house. “Vaser!”

“Stop making noise. I’m right here and, just like you, I can’t move a fucking muscle,” he snarled from behind me. “What’s that fucker doing here?”

“If one hair is missing from her head, I’m going to pluck his feathers one at a time.” My blood was boiling, the veins throbbing under my skin in my fury. “I swear to the fates I will killing him slowly, until he begs for mercy and doesn’t remember his name.”

“As wonderful as all that sounds, I suggest you shut your mouth before he hears us, Tyler. In our position, I don’t think either you or I will do jack shit if he comes this way. Luckily for us, it looks like he can barely hold on to consciousness.” The demon’s words penetrated the fog clouding my mind, pulling me back from the brink of turning feral. “The moment the lights go out for him, his little bubble will be gone, too. We can remove him from that porch when that happens, if we are still alive.”

“I don’t need to cower in front of anyone, not even an Archangel. There is no honor in that, demon.” My voice sounded rough to my own ears. “Is that what you do? Stab in the back like a coward?”

“You can talk shit as much as you want, but I’m still alive centuries later. There is no shame in keeping your head on your shoulders where it belongs.” Vaser sounded pissed, but I didn’t miss the defensive tone in his voice.

The angel turned his head in our direction just as my mate opened the door, and he fell face first into her legs, wrapping his arms around her knees. Her body jerked in surprise, and her eyes widened as she stared open-mouthed at the male kneeling at her feet. Yet again, I was awed by her bravery when she shook off her shock and leaned over the Archangel, her head swiveling this way and that to see if anyone else was around. Assured no one else was near, she made my heart drop between my own feet when she kneeled over, picking him up and closing the door behind them.

A snarl ripped from my chest.

Fear for her life closed my throat, and I doubled my efforts to shake off the magic holding me in place. I could hear Vaser doing the same, his growls and huffing too loud in my ears. As sudden as the magic froze me, it released me the same way. Not expecting it, I pitched forward before catching myself an inch from headbutting a tree. Vaser cursed from behind me, but my feet were already moving.

I was going to kill the feathered fuck.
