Lifting my head tentatively from her hair, I searched her face for any indication of what I did wrong. My mind was replaying the few things I’d done, but apart from calling her my mate, I couldn’t think of anything she could’ve found offensive. Unless she didn’t hear me while my face was in her silky waves.

“The demon.” Jerking my chin in Vaser’s direction, I kept my gaze on hers. “He will be fine, you did nothing wrong. Nothing he didn’t ask for himself.” But my mate was no longer looking at me.

She was watching the demon with betrayal burning in her jeweled eyes.

“You are an incubus?” Echo’s usually lyrical voice was flat, wrenching at my cold heart.

“I am.” The dejected tone when Vaser answered had my head swiveling in his direction. The demon looked as if he was a minute away from meeting his maker. “I haven’t used my power on you, Echo. I don’t have to use my magic for you to want me.”

Understanding smacked me like a ton of bricks falling on my head. My body went numb, but no matter what I did or said, it wasn’t going to change anything. Vaser never told her what type of a demon he was, and in my delirium from her scent, I had foolishly blurted it out. No amount of apologizing would fix this if the female was not willing to hear us out. She was already wiggling in my grip and trying to dislodge me.

“You would say that, wouldn’t you, incubus. I was so stupid!” she spat at Vaser. “Put me down, or so the fates help me I will strangle you where you stand.” Legs kicking, her nails scraped over my arms.

I had no intention of listening to her, but the next thing I knew my arms went limp, dropping to my sides as she hopped down as nimble as a cat. Chin jutting out, she glared at me first, and I stood immobile like the stone I resembled in my other form. Then her eyes found the blanched demon, who was gazing at her with anguish in his amber eyes.

“Echo … “ The incubus took a step and reached toward our mate, but she jumped back, which only stabbed me with more guilt.

“No!” Shoulders squared, she clenched her fists. “I should’ve known because it wasn’t my normal reaction. In fact, I never react like that … like some deprived woman.” A humorless laugh bounced around us as her eyes shimmered with unshed tears. “I want you off my property by the end of the hour. All three of you.”

Vaser hung his head, his chin hitting his chest as I watched her mutely while she stomped away from us, her posture rigid. The moment she rounded the house and the walls hid her from my sight, my knees buckled from the weight pressing on my chest. What have I done … what have I done? I just signed my own death wish, that’s what.

“What did I miss?” The Archangel appeared, glancing around with a frown scrunching his face. “Where is Echo?”

Vaser dropped on the ground, his fists sending spiderwebs spreading across the land. The agony in his roar shredded whatever was left of my dead soul.
