Chapter Fourteen
Vaser
“Are you going to tell me where the human is?” My mate leaned a hip on the counter, her graceful fingers wrapped around the cup of tea she was sipping from.
Two days ago, we wiggled our asses back into her life, our plans going down the drain when we found the human male holding her by the throat and pushing her on the sofa. I was red at the sight, and grateful that the angel had kept his sanity long enough to prevent us from ripping the male limb from limb. Usually, I talked shit to Tyler for his brutish ways, but this time I was front and center to help him with the shredding. It wasn’t in the angel’s nature to kill humans, probably the only reason why that fucker was still alive.
“Earth to Vaser. Do you copy?” Echo drawled, and I couldn’t help the twitch of my lips at the human expression.
She had forgiven me for using my powers on her after I explained when I did it and why. I held onto the hope that one day she would look at me with more than wariness in her jeweled eyes, and I repeated those words like a mantra. Silky lavender locks spilled over her shoulder, and my fingers itched to tangle in them while she moaned my name. My nostrils flared when the scent of her arousal flooded the kitchen where we were facing off. The sexual tension tightened my throat, but she denied me—and herself—because I’d acted without thinking.
“The human is alive, beautiful.” Voice thick with need, I had to clear my throat. The female was going to be the death of me. “Isn’t that enough? We just made sure that he would never hurt you again.”
“He didn’t hurt me, Vaser.” Jutting her chin stubbornly, she stomped her foot. I held back a grin at her childish behavior. She was adorable when she was angry. “The three of you came at the perfect time. I keep telling you that something was wrong with him.”
“And what?” Cocking an eyebrow, I loved her pinkening cheeks when I looked her over from head to toe, completely aware that my hunger for her was showing clearly in my gaze. “You think it wise to go see him?” Her lips parted, but I wasn’t having it. “He doesn’t need help, Echo. The human is sick in his mind to attack a female like that. He should be dead and would’ve been if we didn’t know you’d never forgive us for it.”
“He does need help.” The fates needed to save me from stubborn females. “I’m telling you, there was a shadow riding him like a mule. Something supernatural was screwing with his brain, and if we don’t help him, who will?”
My eyes narrowed on her.
The way her feet shuffled uneasily, her pulse thrumming on the side of her neck, and how she refused to hold my gaze told me she was hiding something. Was the human a lover that she had cut ties with after coming face to face with her fated mates? Is that why she cared so much? But no. That thought sounded stupid even before it fully took hold. There was nothing in her body language or the chemicals oozing out of her pores that indicated something like that. All I felt from her was irritation and annoyance when the human was near her.
“If you tell me why this is so important to you, I’ll do my best to convince Tyler and Angelo to consider taking you to him.” A plan formed in my head to dig out the truth behind her adamant requests to see the male.
“What do you mean why this is important?” Her gaze darted over my face until her eyes locked on the tip of my nose. I suppressed a smirk. “We are talking about a living being, you jerk. Even you as a demon should know the importance of life.” Her jab would’ve worked if I wasn’t aware what she was doing.
“You still haven’t shared which realm you come from, beautiful.” Her jeweled eyes widened in panic before she schooled her features. “Is that why life is so important to you?” I didn’t want to bring up the day she found out what I was, but I’d bear that burden to find the truth. “What are you, Echo? A siren? No wonder my cock hardens every time you speak. Is that why your voice is like a lure pulling me toward you?”
The mention of my cock deepened the red coloring her cheeks and her arousal bloomed stronger. The hardened part of my anatomy jerked in my pants and pressed on my zipper. I was shocked it didn’t burst the damn thing. It took everything in me not to bend her over the counter and bury myself inside her until I didn’t know where she started and I began. Purposely, I adjusted myself while she watched the movement of my hand as if mesmerized. When I chuckled, her eyes lurched back to my face.
My smirk grew.
“Don’t be absurd, Vaser.” Scowling at me, Echo pressed her thighs together. “Siren? Really? I should be offended that you’re comparing me to a swamp creature.” Her breath hitched when I stepped closer to her, invading her space. “What are you doing?”
“It was simply a guess because of your beautiful voice. It’s like hearing an enchanted melody.” Grazing my knuckles over her face, warmth spread through my chest when she shivered. “If I was to compare you with anything, I would’ve said an angel, but Angelo nipped that in the butt when we played the guessing game.”
“I have no doubt you have bets going, too.” Her voice was flat, but she couldn’t pull off annoyance very well. I could tell she was aware of my nearness, just as I was of hers.
“Why don’t you tell me then?” The urge was stronger than me, so I brushed the pad of my thumb over her lower lip. “You are my mate. I will want you no matter what realm you come from.” Her eyes were locked on my mouth, and her tongue poked out to wet her lips. “What are you, Echo?” My whisper had her leaning forward until only a breath separated our mouths from fusing together.
A loud fart bounced around us, and I had to breathe through my mouth so I didn’t faint from the stench.
Echo jumped away with a horrified look on her blanched face.
“Why don’t you tell him and shut him up?” A lazy drawl had me spinning around and pushing my mate behind me. “Seeing him drooling and begging like this is going to make me vomit.”
A creature like I’d never seen before, who had a monstrous head and the body of a cat—or maybe it was a lizard—glared at me from the kitchen table, a barbed tail lashing the air behind it and razor-sharp teeth bared in a grotesque smile. Bright colors covered its fur and scales, the red eyes only adding more of a disaster to its appearance. Another fart filled the air, the horrible odor reminding me of roadkill that had been left to bake in the sun for a week.
My eyes watered.
“Proto.” Echo’s incredulous hiss unlocked my stiff shoulders.
“This is Proto?” She never answered our question a couple of days ago, but I didn’t forget the name.
“I see you’ve heard of me.” The creature preened. “I’ll tell you what she is …”
“Go away you jerk.” Echo screeched, flinging her hand at him over my shoulder.
