“Can I catch a ride home with you?” I asked.
He glanced over his shoulder. “Sure, hop aboard.”
“How’s it going on the food boat? You kill Ash yet?”
He gave me a steady look. “Correction. I’ll give you a ride as long as you don’t ask about Ash. It’s been a long day, and I have no wish to relive it.”
I pouted nearly as much as Noah. “You’re no fun.”
“That’s been established.” He sat in the captain’s seat and started the engine. “You’re too much fun.”
“Not anymore,” I grumbled.
He didn’t argue, which meant he agreed because Sawyer wasalwayshappy to argue with me. He reversed the boat out of the dock, and the breeze tugged at my hair. It’d be even more of a tousled mess when we got to shore, but that was okay. It’d add to my rakish charm.
Not like Declan cared what I looked like, right?
We made the short trip in peace, but as Sawyer approached the dock at the RV park where he kept his camper, he piped up. “You want off here, or should I take you to the pub?”
“Here is fine,” I said. “It’s closer to home.”
“Wanna hang out a while? I could fire up the grill.”
I faked choking. “No. Please… I’m too young to die.”
He flipped me the bird. “Fuck you, man. Just beer then. Stay and have a beer.”
“Next time.”
Sawyer’s eyes narrowed in suspicion. “You’re not going home, are you? You’re heading over to the B&B to pester Declan.”
Damn it. He knew me too well. I never headed home this early unless Kat needed me. I also never passed up a free beer.
“I don’tpesterDeclan,” I said with as much dignity as I could muster. “I haven’t been over there in months.”
“But youareheaded over there tonight.”
“Just to check in,” I said. “He had a problem with the B&B. I’m being a good friend is all.” At his look, I downplayed that. “A good neighbor. A good…colleague in the hospitality business.”
Sawyer snorted. “Careful, Cash, you keep digging that hole and pretty soon you’ll just be a good Peeping Tom.”
“Shut up!” I said with a laugh as he eased into dock and cut the engine. “I don’t really know how to classify it, okay?”
“How about you’re hopelessly obsessed?”
“Harsh,” I said. “Now I’m not giving you any advice about what to do about Ash.”
“I don’t need advice.”
“Fuck him,” I said. “It’s the only way you’ll figure out what you really want.”
“Wow, Cash, so wise,” he said. “And here I thought you’d stopped thinking with your dick.”
“I’m not thinking withmydick,” I said with a wink. “I’m thinking about your poor blue balls.”
I dodged his shove and jumped onto the dock before he could toss me overboard.
Sawyer was conflicted. That had been obvious the first night he showed up to tell us that Ash had kissed him. I was just doing my part to make him consider that he might actually want the guy.
