I snorted. “Fynn wasn’t really my biggest problem.”
“Oh?”
“Long story. Can I talk to Teresa?”
“Uh, why?”
“She’s my friend too.”
“Why not call her phone then?”
Busted. Teresawasmy friend, through Barry, but we didn’t exactly call each other to chat. “Must have lost her number,” I lied.
“Are you sure you ever had it?” His tone was skeptical.
“Just put her on the phone, Barry. Christ. Everything’s an inquisition!”
He grumbled a little more just to bust my balls, and a few seconds later, Teresa came on the line. “Hello, Christian. Barry said you wanted to talk to me?”
“Yes.” I cleared my throat. “I need some dating advice.”
“Ooh. Is this about Jaxson?”
I could hear Barry in the background. “What about Jaxson? Are they doing the dirty?”
Teresa shushed him with a sharp admonishment about rudeness, and I smiled to myself as Barry’s tone turned mopey. Served him right for being an ass.
“Sorry, Christian, you were saying?”
“Jaxson and I are dating,” I said. “At least, that’s the plan. We agreed to try a relationship.”
“I’m so glad. He seems like such a nice guy. Easy on the eyes too.”
“Watch it!” Barry called. He followed it with a guffaw that told me he wasn’t seriously worried. These two had been married for twenty years. Before that, they were close friends. I’d never met a more rock-solid couple.
“Jaxson is great,” I said. “I’m just worried I’ll mess it up.”
“You won’t.”
“I might,” I said. “I, uh, I’m feeling out of my depth.”
“Tell me what’s going on.”
I explained Jaxson’s situation with his daughter, and the desire I had to be the man he needed but also the cluelessness of how to go about it.
“Obviously, I won’t ask to see him today, even though I’d like to,” I said. “But I’m not sure if—”
“Wait. Why not ask to see him today?”
“Well, I don’t want to infringe on his family time, do I? And I definitely don’t want to disregard his need to put his daughter first.”
“Honey, he’s a single dad. All his time is family time.”
I hadn’t really thought of it that way. It wasn’t as if Tori would have sleepovers every night. Howwerewe going to do this?
“I guess I should…wait for him to come to me then? So I don’t intrude?”
Teresa hummed thoughtfully. “I don’t know about that. If you’re going to truly be in a relationship, then you’re hardly intruding. He wants you to be part of his life.”
