“What are you doing? Are you a pervert? The driver’s right here. What the hell?” she hissed, trying to shove his hand away.

Lucas only shook his head, eyes dark with determination. “I’m not doing anything wrong. Just stay still.”

Slowly, he pulled back her shirt from her neck and shoulder, revealing the worn bandage wrapped around her skin. Dark stains seeped through the fabric. Carefully, he peeled back the tape just enough to inspect the wound beneath.

A soft breath escaped him—relief washing over his features. The bleeding had stopped; it was healing.

He smoothed the shirt back over her skin, buttoning it carefully, covering her once again.

Emily watched him warily, sliding back into her seat and turning away to lean against the window. She pressed her shoulder intothe cool glass, putting as much distance between them as the car allowed.”

But Lucas closed the space again, shifting closer until his body blocked her retreat. One hand slammed on the window beside her; the other moved to the back of the seat, fingers curling just above her head, trapping her like prey.

His voice lowered, sharp with worry and accusation.

“Why did you jump in front of that car?”

Emily’s body tensed visibly, her eyes darting away. She hesitated, voice barely above a whisper. “I... don’t know.”

“Do you have amnesia?” he pressed, his gaze piercing. “Do you really not remember anything about me?”

Her lips pressed into a thin line, a flicker of irritation flashing in her eyes. “I told you, I don’t have amnesia,” she snapped. “Why do you keep asking that?”

“You don’t have amnesia?” he said, voice rising slightly. “Then why don't you rememberanythingabout me? You can’t even recall my phone number—something you should know better than anyone. Why are you lying to me?”

Her jaw clenched, eyes narrowing. “Fine. If you think I’m such a liar, then stop showing up in my life! Go be with someone you trust. Amelia—she can’t be your mistress forever. Can she?”

Lucas’s face darkened instantly. His glare bore into her like a dagger.

“How many times do I have to tell you? I have nothing to do with her. We have no relationship.”

He lowered his head briefly, chest rising and falling with ragged breaths, struggling to rein in the storm raging inside. Thememory of her injuries, the hospital, the guilt—they all crashed down on him.

“Let’s go to the hospital,” he said softly, voice gentle now, eyes softening as he reached out. His hand slid down from the window and cupped the side of her neck, thumb tracing slow, soothing circles just below her ear.

Panic flickered across Emily’s face. If he took her there, he’d find out the truth about the memory loss.

“I don’t want to go,” she said quickly, her voice shaky. “I’m fine. I’m talking, I’m walking—why would I need to go to a hospital?”

“I want you to get checked,” he said, voice low but insistent. “You don’t look well. You don’t remember anything about me. How do you expect me to believe you’re alright?”

She met his gaze, anger simmering beneath her calm.

“I don’t rememberanythingabout you because Idon’t careabout you anymore. Can’t you get that?” She took a shaky breath, voice softening. “I’ll go… some other day. Not today. I have things to do. You’re also a very busy man Mr. Cantrell. Don’t waste your time on me.”

Lucas’s jaw clenched, voice hardening. “I have time today. You’re coming with me. You need to be checked—just a quick assessment. That’s it.”

Emily’s panic escalated. “No. Stop it! I told you, I don’t want to go!”

Lucas didn’t answer her directly. He leaned forward slightly and spoke to the driver instead. “How long till we reach the hospital?”

“Fifteen minutes, sir,” the driver answered without turning around.

Emily’s panic shot up. Her chest heaved as her hand flew to the door handle. “Stop the car. I told you I don’t want to go! Stop the car right now or I swear, I’ll jump out!”

She wasn’t bluffing.

Lucas barely had time to react before she yanked the handle and the door clicked open with a harsh sound. The rush of wind whipped into the car. But in an instant, his arm wrapped around her waist and yanked her back with a hard jerk, slamming the door shut with his free hand.
