“We can, but we need to make one stop first okay?”
Great, why can’t anything ever be easy?
“Where?”
“The Detective wants to talk to you at the police station, but I promise I’ll be right there beside you the entire time okay?”
“I don’t really want to. There’s not much to tell them except what I heard from the bathroom.”
“I know you don’t, but it’s just routine, they need to get your official statement since it’s your apartment. They also want you to sit in on viewing a line up.”
“Why would I have to do that, I never saw anyone?”
“They caught the person that broke into your apartment.”
“They did? But I didn’t see who it was Kody.” Why would they need her to look at people in a line up when she doesn’t know anything?”
“They are under the impression that this might be someone that you know and knows you. Don’t worry, no one will be able to see you, we’ll be standing behind a two-way glass so you can watch them but we won’t be seen.”
“And you’ll be there with me?”
“I won’t leave your side.”
“I guess if I don’t have a choice, I just want this over with.”
He placed both of his warm hands on her face and kissed her so sweetly it made her cry.
“We’ll fix this, I promise.”
Chapter Sixteen
While Mark fixed the apartment door, Kody looked out into to the parking lot, checking on Alix who was sitting in her car. He didn’t realize she even owned a car since she walked everywhere. They’d never had a reason to talk about it before. He’d be lost without his truck but since he lived so close to the fire station, he hardly ever had to use it. He assumed the situation was the same for her. Living at his house for a while wouldn’t change anything, her walk would be a few blocks closer.
“Okay, all fixed. Here are the keys. I put a new deadbolt and handle on it and I also put a slide chain on the inside, just to make her feel a little safer.”
“Thanks again Mark. Not sure she’ll be here for a little while though, it’s really got her spooked.”
His buddy said to call if they needed any more help and he took off. Kody double-checked the keys in the locks then shut up everything. He climbed into the drivers’ seat, fastened his seatbelt then looked at her before he started the car.
“Have everything you need?”
“I have my clothes, everything else is just stuff.”
“It’s really going to be okay Alix, I know you don’t think so right now but we’ll get through this. What about your mail, should we have it forwarded?”
“It doesn’t deliver to my apartment, I’ve always had it go to the café. I’m there more than any other place. Except for now I guess.”
He could tell things were dismal for her. She couldn’t stay at her house and the fire inspector hadn’t cleared the café to open yet so she was in limbo. He felt bad for her and there wasn’t much he could do to help, except to offer his own home. He just needed to keep her going forward.
“Let’s head to the police station and then after we’re done there, maybe we could grab an early dinner somewhere. I’ve got a few movies I rented last week that are overdue, but we can go back to my place and watch them if you want.”
“Whatever you want is fine.”
Kody slowed the car at the stoplight and touched her leg. She turned her sad expression toward him.
“Are you sure the people in the lineup wont’ be able to see us? If it is the same person doing all of this, I don’t want them to know if I implicate them.”
“I’m positive, those things are made that way for a reason. The people standing in that room will only be able to see themselves but for us it’ll be like looking through a tinted car window. The police would never put you in danger and neither would I.”
