Jordan gave Blake a hug and whispered in his ear. Blake shook his head when he stepped back. “Come on, Andrew, show me to the condo.”
* * *
Jordan stared at the closed door. The choice to end things with Andrew bothered her. Perhaps it was because he was still here. Normally, couples didn’t stay near each other after a breakup.
Adam sat down in the spot Andrew had vacated. “That talk will go better than you assume.”
Deidre paced the room. “So, I guess I get to try out my dream of running my own firm. “I’d like access to Hastings software since it’s already attached to the security in this house. Andrew is Hastings’ best driver, but he can’t be on the team.”
Jordan excused herself, confident her input was no longer needed. Princess followed her into the kitchen. The refrigerator hadn’t been stocked yet, and the cupboards were bare. As Jordan sat at the table to write out a list of the foods she wanted, the door to the single-car garage opened and Tonie came in, followed by Ben, who was carrying the suitcases.
“How do you feel?” asked Jordan.
Tonie sat down in the chair opposite Jordan. Princess circled her chair. “Stupid. I can’t believe I didn’t even look for signs of tampering. Had I not guzzled almost the entire bottle, I might have realized something was wrong faster. Sorry about Princess. I gave her a bit of my water in her bowl before I started drinking.”
“I’m glad the damage wasn’t worse.”
“I had Ben record me packing your things.” Tonie handed Jordan her phone.
Jordan pushed the phone away. “You didn’t need to do that. I trust you.”
“That isn’t why. I know the police went through the room, but if anything is missing, it might be easier to figure it out from where it was in the room.”
“Oh.” Jordan took the phone and watched the video, pausing it to rewind through her underwear drawer. Everything was there, plus a sense of violation. Underwear drawers did not belong in videos. Plus, knowing the police had searched through her room didn’t help. Something was wrong in the next drawer. Jordan replayed it. “Did you see a baby-blue scarf with pink flowers?”
“The one you wore last Tuesday?”
“Yes, that one.”
“Could you have left it at the trailer?”
“Maybe.” Jordan watched the rest of the video. “The scarf is the only thing missing besides the toothbrush you questioned when you went through my things. I know this is crazy, but if someone poisoned the water, could they have done something to my makeup?”
Tonie looked at Ben. Ben nodded. “It is possible.”
“The police didn’t check it?”
Jordan handed the phone back. “Perhaps we should throw it away—and yours too. I’ll pay for new makeup.”
“Should we get it tested?” asked Tonie.
“My gut says better to know how far someone would go.” Ben left the room.
Tonie followed him with her eyes. “I have a mandatory week of paid leave. It’s been nice working with you. I hope nothing else happens.”
“You and me both.”
Tonie exited the room.
Jordan finished her shopping list, then went online to replace her makeup. Some local department store would probably carry most of the items, but she could only picture a random bodyguard having to pick it up.
Andrew came into the kitchen. “There you are.”
“You survived?”
“Blake and I reached an understanding.”
“Do I need to check on him?”
