Adam stood near the TV bouncing Harmony in his arms. “You didn’t get the message, did you?”
“What message?”
“The vid—” September bent over, laughing.
“I’m not sure it’s that funny.” Adam smiled. Harmony laughed, pointing at her mother and clapping her hands. “Sit down, Jordan, and watch this home movie my sister sent my parents early this afternoon. We just got it a half hour ago.”
Adam clicked the remote, and the large screen filled with a video of Andrew standing at the bottom of the stairs to a small jet.
The video ended with the plane taking off.
“So where is he now?”
September regained control of her laughter. “According to the Hastings app, he’s parked at Claire Lee’s. We have been trying to call him. As we agreed, I told no one you were coming. Adam knew it was a possibility Andrew would fly out, but he didn’t tell me. I died when he showed me the video.”
“So Andrew is at my grandma’s, probably being interrogated while we speak?”
September started laughing again. “I could write a country song about this and it would be a number-one hit.”
Jordan laughed too. “Can I see it again? I want to hear the part about true love.”
* * *
“This is the most mixed-up love story since O’Henry’sGift of the Maji, and I should know—I’ve been in two adaptations.” Claire handed back Andrew’s phone.
“Will you tell me where Jordan is now?” Andrew looked at Mr. Blake, then at the actress.
“Chicago.” Mr. Blake laughed.
“Her friend September invited her to come visit. She left this morning and should’ve landed an hour ago.” Claire delivered the explanation with a straight face while Mr. Blake turned away to hide his laughter.
“You’re telling me I flew out here to see her and she went to Chicago to see me?” Andrew scratched Princess behind the ears.
Mr. Blake laughed so hard he couldn’t answer.
Claire motioned for Andrew to follow her down the hall to a tidy office. “Call her. You’re welcome to stay here until she returns.” She put a hand on his cheek. “You look as though you need a pain reliever and some sleep.”
Andrew sat down in an upholstered chair and opened his phone. Princess jumped in his lap. Perhaps he shouldn’t have ignored Adam’s calls since he landed at the airport. He only waited for one ring for Jordan to answer.
“September won’t stop laughing. Let me go into another room.” Muffled sounds filled the next several seconds, then he could hear the sound of a door shutting. “I saw your video.”
“The one Abbie recorded?”
“Yes. You’ve lost some weight.”
Andrew rubbed the back of his neck. “Just a little.”
“Did you really fly out there to declare your undying love to me?”
“Not in those exact words. But, ya. I didn’t want to do it on the phone.”
“I have a ticket on the first flight out in the morning. Will you stay there until I get there? Don’t bother with a hotel. You can stay at my place.”
“Your grandma already said I could stay here. Princess seems to want me to stay too. Claire also told me to take some pain reliever.”
“Are you in pain?”
Andrew took a deep breath. “Some. It still hurts to laugh, so I have been trying not to ever since Mr. Blake nearly busted a gut over our situation.”
