“True. You still have time, then.”
Jordan shivered. “That’s just weird. I’m not making that one of my filmography goals.”
“Worse goals have been made in Hollywood.” Grandma’s face grew grim. “I suppose you heard the British are diving to the wreck today.”
“Yes. I’m trying to not think about it. I hope it is them. I’m tired of having the story come up every couple years.”
“At least this isn’t some sighting on a remote island. Those are the hardest. I accepted my son’s death years ago. I detest the press questioning my decisions to have Hirst and Ellen declared dead or our annual memorial so they can find a new angle.”
Jordan took her grandma’s hand. “I know. I wonder if it’s easier for the other families. No one calls them for interviews or waits to catch them outside of work.”
“It could be harder for them. Every time we’re on TV, it could seem like everyone else forgot their loss.”
They sat in silence for a minute, then Grandma leaned over and kissed Jordan’s cheek. “I should let you get some sleep. You have to film tomorrow. The real reason I came in was to tell you I’m staying for a couple more days. I’d rather be together when we hear the news. If you want, I can hang around the set and keep Storm in line.”
“You don’t need to. I think he got the message. However, may I have an extended curfew tonight?” To think she had a curfew at this age. It was more out of respect for Grandma and work demands that she and Andrew kept their late nights to a minimum.
“I can arrange that.” Grandma smiled. “I really like him. Good night.”
“Love you.” Jordan squeezed her grandma and watched her leave. As soon as the door closed, she texted Andrew.
Grandma was testing you! And you passed.
—Did she give me a grade?
No, but she said you’re a keeper.
—: ) Alan found Hannah. Do you think she would meet with you?
Probably. She was pretty excited when we talked at the airport. I don’t really want to set it up through my publicist. Maybe you can set it up and we can visit her after school.
—I’ll call her mother tomorrow and see if I can set something up for after you’re done filming.
FYI, Grandma is staying two or three more days. The Brits dove for the plane today, and we want to be together for the news. There have been over eighty vanished flights with over fifteen passengers worldwide since World War II, so the chances that this is the right plane are remote.
—You’ve quoted those statistics before.
Jordan stared at the unexpected response.I guess I have. The good thing is that, usually, the divers are able to identify the wreckage pretty fast.
—Then you stop reciting the facts until the next news story.
Pretty much.
—That’s a hard way to live.
Jordan swallowed, glad they weren’t on video chat and relieved Andrew had never placated her or pitied her.
—Do you want me around when you hear the news?
You realize that means you hang out with Grandma tomorrow?
—Yes. When she isn’t grilling me, she has fun stories.
Yes, I’d like you around.
—I’ll be there.
Good night.
