Even under his brother’s glare, Andrew held her hand as they got up from the couch. The home office contained one chair behind a desk, and a small sofa.

Adam pulled out the chair. “How long?”

“How long what?” Andrew asked.

“You know.” Adam sat down in the rolling chair.

“You mean how long was my first kiss with Jordan? That is a pretty invasive question.”

“Tonight—is this the first time you’ve been distracted?”

“Tonight is the first time we’ve shared a kiss and I became unaware of my surroundings. I was going to talk with you about being reassigned as soon as you got here.”

Adam raised a brow. “So, before when you’ve kissed, you’ve been aware of your surroundings?”

“I already told you about the one in the trailer.”

“You did?” Jordan put her hand over her mouth.

Andrew turned to her. “Considering the circumstances and how angry I was over what Storm did, I felt it best to put it in the daily report that goes to Mr. Blake and our files. If there is any cause to question my actions that day, the report is written and filed.”

“But it was so...” Jordan searched for a word.Degrading,wrong,shameful.

“Traumatic. Which is why I filed it. Mr. Blake needed to know.”

Adam’s chair squeaked, and he cleared his throat. “I owe both of you an apology. I shouldn’t have goaded my brother just now. Miss Lee, in case you are wondering, I didn’t see the kiss, and I apologize for my rudeness. I do agree with Andrew, though. He should be off your protective detail. I can tell you from experience, it is difficult to do a proper job when you are in love with your principal.”

Love?Jordan giggled to hide her nervousness at the thought. Both men looked at her. She scrambled to cover her reaction. “You know how wrong that sounds when you say principal? I think of the woman who played the principal at the elementary school in the kids show...”

Adam grinned back. “Yuck, that sounds bad. Look, guys, it’s late. I’ll give you a few moments alone. In the morning, we can call Mr. Blake and let him know we’re changing out the detail and why. Andrew, I assume the police will want you to stay around for a couple days. We’ll need to sort things out with Hearthfire. If you’ll excuse me, I’ll go see where Deidre has put me. Good night. Don’t stay up too late.” Adam shut the door as he left.

Did that mean Adam approved? He’d left them alone in a room. Granted, there were no curtains on the French doors.

Andrew stared at the door with a puzzled expression. “Do you think you’ll be able to sleep now?”

Jordan felt heat flood her face. “Maybe not, but I don’t think I’ll be seeing Tonie on the floor anymore.”

“Do you think I can get a good-night kiss?”

No one sat in the room beyond the doors. “I’d like that very much.”

Andrew’s and Adam’s phones simultaneously rang with alarm and call sounds. Andrew’s caller ID showed Mr. Blake. What had him calling at four thirty in the morning, California time? “Hello?”

“Is that what you call protecting my girl? I should have you horsewhipped. What were you thinking?”

Andrew held the phone away from his ear.

Andrew turned his phone to face Adam. Storm’s video of their kiss played on the screen. “Mr. Blake, that is the incident I put in my report two weeks ago, the day it happened. I also reported how Storm intended to blackmail Jordan with the video if she didn’t have brunch with him this past Sunday.”

“My girl doesn’t sidle up to some man like a two-dollar hussy. And you never said you participated!”

Actually, Andrew’s report had been fairly detailed and included the full extent of his participation, or lack thereof. “Do you know when the video was released?”

“Does it matter?”

“Yes. Most of the country is still asleep. If we act fast, we can get it down.” Andrew put his phone on speaker as he dressed.
