Jordan grabbed his hand. Ben calmly informed the 911 operator of Tonie’s condition including pulse rate. Both Princess and Tonie were breathing without problem. Andrew switched the call to his earpiece.
“Why did you do that?”
“Because you’re squeezing my hand harder each moment, and they’re at the point where 911 is keeping Ben on the line by repeating questions.”
Jordan relaxed her death grip. “What’s going on?”
“From what Ben is saying, it looks like someone may have put a drug in a water bottle. Help is on the way. If Ben can take care of this without having the police question you, he will. We were only in the room for a few seconds.” He reached for Jordan’s hand.
She leaned over and leaned into his chest. “Why me? Why me?”
Andrew had no answers.
Sirens wailed in the distance as three police cars and an ambulance pulled into the drop-off in front of the hotel. “Ben, they’re here. Keep broadcasting.”
Jordan put her hand over his. “Don’t shut me out. I want to listen.” She had put on her strong voice.
Andrew changed the audio back to the speakers. They sat in silence as they listened to Ben rehearse the incident to the officer.
“Who else was with you? And don’t tell me no one. You have four dinners here.”
“Jordan Lee and Andrew Hastings, her bodyguard. He evacuated her. They are nearby if you want to question them.”
“Miss Lee again?”
“Yes, sir.”
“I’ll want to question her, but it can wait until after we test the water and get Miss... ? What did you say her name was?”
“Tonie Day.”
“Miss Day and the dog medical treatment. I’ll send the dog to the vet our K-9 unit uses. They’re the best in town.”
Andrew and Jordan watched the paramedics exit the building with Tonie on a gurney. An officer carried Princess to a patrol car.
The officer’s voice continued over the speakers. “I will seal this room as a crime scene. Please apologize to Miss Lee for any inconvenience and find her someplace safer than this hotel. What are you going to do now?”
There was a pause before Ben answered. “It’s my duty to check on Miss Lee. Then I will go to the hospital to keep a watch on Tonie.”
“I’ll make sure they find you to tell you the status of the dog. Here’s my number.”
“Thanks, Officer.”
“Tell Miss Lee her dog is in good hands and I’ll talk with her later.”
“Will do.”
Andrew pulled out of the lot by the far exit before the officer or Ben could leave the building.
“Where are we going?”
“September’s.” Andrew unmuted his phone. “Dispatch, send a copy of the tape and an incident report to Mr. Blake. If you can reach him, I’d like to talk with him ASAP. Also, contact Stu with Hearthfire security and give him an abbreviated report. I’m taking Miss Lee to September’s. Do not disclose the location to Hearthfire.”
“Anything else, Mr. Andrew?”
“Yes. Ben came up with the tech team to set up Claire Lee’s condo. The rest of the team is probably only an hour or so out. Turn them around and send me a full detail.”
“I have Mr. Blake on the line.”
