“She can’t come to the phone right now. “

“Sorry. I binge-watched the rest of season one ofThe Adventures of Princess Samwhile you were in your read-through today.”

“No, you didn’t!” Jordan hugged her pillow to her chest.

“Not much else to do other than watch your dog sleep. We established that the doggy channel was not entertaining.”

“It could be argued season one isn’t entertaining either.”

“Au contraire. Princess Sam and the rainforest was very entertaining.”

Jordan caught her reflection in the mirror. Thank goodness Andrew couldn’t see her blushing. On film, that shade of red needed makeup enhancement. “New topic, please?”

They’d talked for the next two hours and watched one of her grandma’s most famous movies on the oldies cable channel together from their own rooms. Princess whined at the door. “I think Princess needs you.”

“I’ll be right up. Let Stu know.”

Jordan dashed into the bathroom and redid her bun and checked to make sure her T-shirt didn’t have chocolate dribbled down the front. “Where’s your leash?”

Her heart jumped at the knock on the door. She checked through the peephole before opening it for Andrew. Princess danced around his feet. “Someone is excited to see me.”

Their fingers brushed as Jordan handed him the leash. Two someone’s were excited to see him.

Princess raced Andrew down the stairs and to the area of grass specified for dog use. When she finished, she nudged Andrew’s leg to propel him back into the building. He understood the dog’s excitement. After two hours on the phone, he wanted to get back to talking to Jordan too.

Stu stood guard in the hallway outside Jordan’s door. “Ten minutes.” He spoke so low Andrew almost missed it.

He knocked on the door, and Jordan opened it immediately. Princess bounded in, Andrew close behind. As soon as Jordan shut the door, Andrew signed, “Stu said ten minutes. Do you want me to search for new bugs?”

“I don’t care. But will you make sure the balcony is secure?” she signed back.

Andrew nodded and checked all the rooms and windows. Stu’s bugs were no longer on the lamp or in the kitchen. Jordan curled up in one of the big chairs with her feet under her and Princess in her lap.

“All clear,” he signed.

Jordan spoke. “Thanks. You have six minutes left. Will you sit down for a minute?”

Andrew sat in the chair opposite her.

“How do you think he got in to leave the photo on the balcony?”

He frowned before answering. “You shouldn’t think about this right before bed.”

“I know. But no one is telling me anything.”

“My guess is the front door.” Andrew had checked the roof. There was no evidence of anyone having rappelled down. “I’m glad you’re keeping Princess up here tonight. She’ll growl if anyone tries to get in.”

“I know. I think she is an actress. Her bark belongs to a Doberman. You’re sure she won’t need to go out?” His raised brows, indicating the question was about more than just the dog.

Jordan pointed to herself. “I’m sure Princess will be fine tonight.”

Andrew laughed and stood. “I’d better go.”

Jordan pushed Princess off her lap and stood to see him to the door.

“You’ll lock up behind me?”
