“Just wondering.”

“Did something happen with Jordan?”

“Not really. I dreamed about her. I’ve never dreamed about a client the way I dreamed about her.” This was way too embarrassing. Why had he asked for a call?

“Good thing too. I can’t imagine what Colin Ogilvie would do to you if you admitted you’d dreamed about his wife the way you are implying.” Since Colin could hack into anything in the world, the possibilities were endless. Andrew had been handling for Candice Ogilvie since Colin married her as his primary account. Protecting Colin was easy, he only left his computer when his wife made him. Mrs. Ogilvie was another matter, she’d randomly detour to a children’s hospital, or neglect to tell them about a speaking appointment. When he dreamed of Mrs. Ogilvie it was usually a nightmare involving paparazzi disguised as sick children and everyone had rainbow hair.

Andrew followed the dog back inside. “Ha-ha. I think it must be because this job has me worried about things. It might help if the Hearthfire guards were better trained. The whole guarding her against unknown threats and the guards’ incompetence has me overanalyzing everything.”

“So, are you over analyzing enough to dream-kiss your client?”

“We didn’t kiss...”

“I knew it. What happened?” Suppressed laughter laced Adam’s voice.

“Last night, I went up to get the dog. Miss Lee found another bug. She warned me about fighting with Stu, and I realized that she was playing things smart when it came to the guards and was aware of her safety. I saw the real her for a few unguarded moments, and we connected. Stupid, right? Nothing happened.” That was as close to explaining the simple touch as he would get.

“Did you want it to?”

“No way!” Andrew lowered his voice. “I will not follow the family curse. Forget I said anything about it.”

“Curse?”

“You know, breaking the client/guard barrier. It’s one of the cardinal rules of being a bodyguard: don’t get too personal with the client. Marriage is way too personal. Our family is getting a reputation.”

“Two days and you are thinking marriage?”

“No! I’m talking you and September, Abbie and Preston, Alex and Kimberly, not to mention whatever is or is not happening with Alan and Elle. Deidre says our firm has a reputation.”

Adam laughed. “Maybe, but have you ever seen your siblings happier? Look, Andrew, I know how much you hate following in our footsteps, but when it comes to love, follow your heart. Don’t be so caught up in not following us or following the rules you don’t let it happen. I was lucky I got a second chance. And it isn’t like we followed a pattern. Alex married Kimberly when they only knew each other a day.”

So not helping.Andrew searched for the words to end the conversation.

Adam spoke again. “As far as your nothing-happened thing. It could be a trust moment. You’ve had those with clients before. And if ever you had a client you needed to trust you, it’s Jordan Lee.”

“That makes sense, and after the rose incident, I needed to trust her. Will you talk to Mom and Tonie? I do need a second set of eyes up here.”

“Will do.”

Andrew ended the call, glad he’d found a reasonable excuse for the irrational thoughts he had.

His phone pinged, and Jordan’s icon popped up.

—Paul arranged for a spa day to “calm my nerves.” Dog park later?

Yes.

He scratched Princess’s ears. “Looks like it’s just you and me, girl.”

The dog’s eyes grew large, and she tilted her head. Perhaps she was as disappointed as he was.

“Imagine. Two more months and I can paint my nails whatever color I want.” Reggie, who played Princess Sam’s sidekick, put the bottle of bright-orange nail polish back on the shelf and chose a neutral shade.

Jordan picked up a bottle of clear polish. “Not for long. You’ll have another role locked up soon.”

“When I do, it won’t have as many restrictions as Hearthfire’s. And I’ll get to wear whatever dress I want when I walk the red carpet.”
