“Alex would never make it necessary.”
“Did he tell you what exactly I am saying no to?”
Candace shrugged. “Not exactly. Just that he had a plan that would help you and the baby and you were being stubborn.”
“Stubborn? Mrs. Capps came up with a scheme for me to marry Alex. It is a sham, a marriage ofinconvenience for him, and I’m being stubborn?” Kimberly couldn’t help raising her voice. “We’ve known each other for a day. This will ruin his life. A divorce after only a few months. Any woman worthy of him will think twice and run the other way. It won’t matter what his story is.”
“He didn’t mention marriage. When?”
“Today. So I can go get an ultrasound.” Kimberly ignored the knock on the door.
“And this is Mrs. Capps’s idea?” Candace leaned her cheek on her hand.
Alex tapped Kimberly’s shoulder. “Mrs. Capps wants to talk to Candace.”
Kimberly handed over the phone.
“Oh, it’s one of those video calls. Don’t tell anyone this isn’t approved technology. Did you know your old roommate and your bodyguard were in the house?”
“Yes, Mrs. Capps. I hired him.”
“Did you know they were here alone?” Mrs. Capps’s mouth formed a thin line.
“I assumed they were.”
“Oh.”
“And I trust Alex to do his job. Which sometimes requires being alone in a house with a woman. Did you really suggest they get married?”
Mrs. Capps held the phone much too close, poor Candace likely getting an intimate view of her nostrils. “Yes. It is a very sensible course of action.”
“I’m sure it is. May I talk with Kimberly again? We are going to go ride the London Eye.”
“What is the London Eye?”
“It is a big Ferris wheel. Please hand me back to Kimberly?”
Mrs. Capps handed the phone back.
Kimberly looked around the room. With both Mrs. Capps and Alex there, whatever Candace would say had better not be personal.
“Everyone is listening, right?”
Kimberly nodded.
“You always found an open window when all the doors were locked, and it always worked out.”
“Even when I broke the lock?”
“It let you in when you needed it the other night, so I consider that working. Okay, I’ve got to go. Hugs to both of you.” Candace smiled a Cheshire-cat grin before the screen went dark.
Mrs. Capps held up a light-blue dress and white cap. “Let’s go get you changed. The pins can be tricky the first time.”
Kimberly found herself in her room and half disrobed before she could object.
“Do you have any sensible shoes? Those flip-flops will give you away in a second.”
“I have a pair of tennis shoes.”
