“I’m not sure if they are looking for her or if it was the father-in-law making things more dire.” Alan’s words echoed Alex’s thoughts.

“I haven’t mentioned going into the Chicago office.”

“I’ll make a call or two. Uncle Donovan owes us a favor.”

“For what?”

“None of your business.” Alan’s sharp tone set Alex on alert.

“What’s up?”

“ZoElle’s been training with Deidre. Again.”

Alex agreed with their sister that the new office manager, whom everyone other than Alan called Elle, would make an excellent bodyguard given more training. “And this is a bad thing?”

Alan grunted.

Alex suppressed a laugh. “Elle will make a good bodyguard. You need to let her grow.”

“We weren’t talking about ZoElle.”

“Fine. About my unexpected client—she’s dealing with her lockdown situation better than expected.” The electronic gate opened automatically as Alex pulled into the private drive leading to the caretaker’s house. “But it would be helpful if we could give Kimberly one or two female bodyguards.”

“Deidre is out of the office for a week starting tomorrow.” Like many others in the office, Deidre was taking advantage of the Crawford’s and Ogilvie’s long Europe trip.

“Is there anyone who’s unassigned?”

“Not at the moment. And don’t even think about asking for ZoElle. She’s not ready.”

“I agree she isn’t ready to lead a team, but she can take a few shifts.”

“ZoElle is off-limits.” Alan’s warning was yet another reason the brothers and Abbie were placing bets on Alan and Elle’s potential dating future.

Alex shut off his truck and picked up his phone to continue the conversation. “I’m not desperate enough to go over your head to Dad yet. Kimberly needs a female bodyguard. She is pregnant.”

“When is she due?”

“She’s at twenty-five weeks. August, maybe?”

“I’ll see what I can shift around over the weekend. There’s a couple others who have been working with the Ogilvies and Crawfords, but they are taking their two-week vacations to coincide with the month-long trip to Europe.”

The call disconnected. Alex only paused a moment before dialing his sister’s number. “Hey, Abbie, how ya doing?”

“About as fine as any elephant could be.”

“I thought you wanted a gestation period shorter than two years.”

“Hasn’t Mom told you not to tease a pregnant woman?”

Alex refrained from laughing. “You’re the one who mentioned elephants.”

“Even walking like a landed whale, I could still take you. What are you doing with your time with the Ogilvies and Crawfords out of the country?”

“I came down to check on an alarm at the Art House.”

“Couldn’t the locals handle the alarm?”

“I’m glad they didn’t. The intruder is an old friend of Mrs. Ogilvie. She entered through the skylight in the loft.”
