“How very chivalrous of you.” I snort, knowing I sound incredibly bitchy. I pause, placing two sugars in my coffee. “I apologise. I suppose it’s good to know there are some men out there that don’t treat women like an object,” I add.
“Careful, Miss Fox, or I will take that as a compliment,” Nyx teases. I subtly reach for the cream while flipping him the middle finger, for only him to see. A chuckle escapes him, and I can’t help but smile in return.
Enemies with a mutual respect. I’m not sure that is possible, but it is what this feels like.
CHAPTER TEN
MORRIGAN
This is insane.I know Edna said about the horse racing, but I wasn’t expecting this, and by the look on her face, she wasn’t, either. “Well, he kept this hidden,” Edna mutters as we watch ten horses and jockeys get ready to race.
“This is nearly as big as the Kentucky Derby!” I blurt out.
“Not quite, dear. They have nineteen horses. This is merely a personal version for our entertainment,” one of the men states, smirking at me like I’m stupid.
“I have an Olympic sized pool and a diving board. We often host gala events and water polo,” Sherry boasts.
“Interesting. I shall have to keep an out for my invite to your next event,” Nyx says cockily.
Sherry merely gives him a flirty look. “I shall make sure you are at the top of the list, Lord O’Connor,” she purrs.
I roll my eyes. Does she want to just start humping his leg? She couldn’t be more obvious.
“Do you have any space or sport facility, Miss Fox?” a man called William asks.
I can’t help it. The smart ass just rises to the service and I’m unable to hold back. “I have the world’s largest sex club,” I state blankly. Edna chokes on her champagne next to me and I pat herback. “Of course, it holds the world’s largest dildo and butt plug, too,” I add casually. “If you would ever like an invite to one of our events, I would be more than happy to make sure you get one,” I say with a smile.
“Well, that is just uncouth.” Sherry tuts.
“Now, come on, Sherry. I think you’d rather enjoy it. Lord knows you already walk around with something firmly shoved up your rear,” I snipe.
Her mouth drops open. “How dare you!” she gasps.
Meanwhile, Edna is howling with laughter beside me, and a few of the men let out a chuckle; her husband included.
“You cannot talk to me like that,” she huffs.
“Relax, Sherry. I’m just teasing. Isn’t that right, gentlemen? It’s just harmless business banter.” I smirk, sipping my champagne. The men laugh and she slinks away, probably to soothe her ego.
“I knew the moment I saw you that you would make this weekend unforgettable,” Edna beams.
“Come on, Edna. Let’s place some bets.” I smile, linking my arm through hers and lead her towards the bookkeeper stationed to the right of us. I catch Henry talking in the far corner with a man I haven’t really paid that much attention to. He’s kept himself to himself for the most part. Their conversation looks heated, if Henry’s sour face is anything to go by. “Edna, who is Henry talking to?” I ask.
Edna’s gaze follows mine. “That is Lance Walker. He deals a lot in shipping and exports.”
My heart jitters. He has to be the one organising the shipping of the girls. Damn it, why can’t I have some cool tech that I could take photos with, or listen in with a tiny earpiece? “Maybe I should meet with Lance. He could do me a deal on shipping my products further,” I state.
“Well, if I were you, I wouldn’t. There are rumours about him, and if they’re true, I wouldn’t want anything to do with him,” Edna mutters quietly.
My gaze snaps to hers. “Like what?” I press.
She shakes her head. “I can’t discuss it here. Just trust an old lady,” she says, patting my arm.
I don’t push her any further. I’m learning that Edna, albeit older, is a strong and stern woman. I’m pretty sure you could never make her do something she didn’t want to do.
After placing our bets, we walk back to the stands where our assistants are waiting for us, standing behind our chairs with their arms at their backs, staring straight ahead. We take our seats and immediately they are filling our glasses with fresh, ice cold water. I almost wanted to order something ridiculous, just to see if they could supply. I take a sip of my water, actually enjoying the break from champagne.
“Oh my god, what is in this water?’ I gasp.
