MORRIGAN

Once the meal was over,I excused myself up to my room. Penny was there ready to show me where it was. It was extravagant, just like the rest of this place; a huge claw tub was in the bathroom, and it even had a separate shower big enough for two people. The four-poster bed was huge; four people could fit in it. I removed my make-up and changed into the silk nightgown Eden had insisted I wore to sleep in. It was full length, had thin barely there spaghetti straps, and it was backless. The material skimmed over my body, highlighting my curves. I pull my hair to one side and twist, looking at my reflection.

“This is ridiculous. Who wears something that covers so much, yet is also sexy to bed?” I mumble. If I wasn’t worried about cameras, I would just sleep naked, but I couldn’t risk them seeing my tattoo. It would give everything away. Damn, I wish could have just brought cookie monster pyjamas with me. Surely some rich folk wear comfy pyjamas.

I climb into bed and sink down under to the covers, sighing at how unbelievably comfortable it is. Flicking the lamp off, the room plummets into darkness. I close my eyes and the usual haunting images flicker through my mind. Blood, Mom’s eyes, her pale face...

I blink my eyes open and switch the light back on, laying there on my back looking up. This is why I fuck myself into exhaustion every night, so I don’t have to think or see those memories. I’m not sure how long I lay there fighting with my own thoughts before I finally drift off to sleep, but I am woken up by a loud, high-pitched alarm. I startle awake and jump out of bed, stumbling half asleep as I make my way to the door. I swing it open, and Penny is there, her hand raised and poised, ready to knock.

“Miss Fox, that is the fire alarm. We need you to make your way out of the building and to the front drive until we can determine the cause,” she orders. I nod as I slip my feet into the complimentary slippers and make my way along the hall, along with everyone else as Penny stays behind, knocking on doors. As I make it down to the ground floor, there is a commotion as everyone is stood crowded around one of the staff who is stood there, pleading for them to evacuate.

“I’m not walking out there. Do you know how much this nightgown cost? It’s raining and it will be ruined!” I hear a woman that I’m pretty certain is Sherry protests.

“This is outrageous. Expecting us to stand out there in the middle of the night in our undergarments!” a man huffs.

I roll my eyes and look around for another way out. If there is a fire, they can all stand here and burn to hell. I’m not going to hang around. I spot what looks like a side door that’s slightly open. I make my way to it, pushing it open, but I quickly come to an abrupt halt when I see Nyx stood there in front of an open filing cabinet, his hands holding sheets of paper. He freezes, his jaw set tight, his eyes searing through mine.

I arch my brow in question before slowly and quietly shutting the door behind me. I step further into the room, that I now know is an office come library. With each step I take, he doesn’t move. He just watches me, waiting to see what I will do next. Icome to a stop in front of him, my eyes still fixed on his until I look down at the papers in his hands.

Just receipts and order forms. Nothing of any use to me. I look back up into his eyes. “You better start talking, Lord O’Connor,” I demand in a low warning, making sure to keep my voice down so not to draw any attention to us.

“There is nothing to discuss. Henry owes me money. I was merely looking for—” He pauses.

My brow raises and I give him poignant look before I snatch the papers from his hand and hold them up. “Looking for what? A receipt for him paying you back?” I scoff shaking my head. “Tell me what you are looking for,” I demand, leaning in closer. He looks down at me, his jaw tight, clearly pissed that I’ve caught him out.

“I don’t have to explain anything to you,” he grounds out.

“Oh, I think you do. One scream from me and you’ll be up shit’s creek,” I state.

He lets out a huff of a laugh before leaning in closer, his breath dancing across my cheek. “Careful, little girl. You have no idea what you are messing with,” he threatens.

I smirk, moving quickly, so quickly he doesn’t see it coming. Using my body, I crouch low, sweeping my leg out and knocking him off his feet, He crashes to the floor with a thud. I move, swiping the envelope blade off the desk before straddling him, holding the blade against his neck. His eyes are wide with surprise and a smugness takes over me.

“You are the one that needs to be careful,” I retort.

He smiles before pushing himself up into a sitting position. I keep the blade pressed against his neck as I’m still straddling his lap. “I knew there was something more to you,” he whispers.

The creek of the door opening startles us. I think quickly and throw the blade across the room before threading my fingers through Nyx’s black hair.

“You owe me,” I whisper before crashing my mouth to his.

“What the fu—” he starts to protest, but as soon as my lips move against his, the words stop coming. He kisses me back, his hands gliding up over the silk gown on my thighs as his tongue swipes against mine, playing, coaxing. I can’t help the whimper that escapes me as his hands glide to my behind.

“Excuse me,” a soft voice calls out.

“What’s taking so long? Move!” Henry’s voice booms. I break the kiss, giving Nyx a wink. “What the hell?!” Henry bellows.

And queue my Oscar worthy acting. “Oh my gosh!” I gasp, clasping my chest as I get to my feet. I pretend to blush, looking away. “I am so very sorry, Henry. We got carried away; too much champagne,” I rush out, walking to him. I place my hand gently on his arm. “I completely understand if you wish for us to leave. I am so ashamed of my actions,” I babble, giving him my best sorrowful, doe-eyed look. Just as I knew he would, the prick’s eyes wander over my body. Fucking slimeball.

He places his hand over mine and pats it. “No need to apologise. I understand when the moment can take you by surprise.” He winks.

Ugghh, kill me now, I think to myself.

“I didn’t realise you two were an item?” Henry states.

“Oh, we are—” I pause, trying to find the right words.

“Yes,” Nyx states dominantly as he comes up behind me, placing the palm of his hand low on my bare back. “It’s early days, and neither of us knew we were coming here. So, it was quiet the surprise.” He smiles. I subtly jab my elbow into his ribs.
