‘They can't see us, nor smell us now,’ he murmured. ‘You’re safe.’
Elle turned back to the others, looking wary as if she was afraid of what his Brothers were going to do. She put herself in front of him, shielding him and he loved her even more in that moment, but he drew her behind him. This was between him and Rye and Nyx.
But his Brothers didn't look angry, nor were they preparing for an attack.
Rye stepped forward. ‘It's been a long time,’ he said.
‘Aye.’
‘Are you here with us now?’ Nyx asked.
The Beast shook his head. ‘I'll leave Thorne in control for now.’
Elle grabbed his hand. ‘Please try and speak to him.’
He squeezed her hand gently. ‘I'll try,’ he promised, ‘but he rarely hears me now.’

Thorne
Thorne looked around him, finding that he was holding her hand. He threw it down with an angry sound.
He glanced at his Brothers and deflated. They knew now.
‘You should have told us,’ Nyx said. ‘We already suspected, but you should have told us.’
‘What did he do? What did he say?’ Thorne demanded to know.
‘He was himself,’ Nyx said. ‘We're safe for now. Let's sleep while we can. Tomorrow we'll reach the Camp.’
Thorne watched as the other three went back to their bedrolls and tried to go back to sleep, but he simply sat on his, staring at the fire for a long time.
He'd heard the Beasts words in his mind for the first time since their split.
Are you there?
But there was only silence in his mind.
A part of him yearned for the other side of him. He’d pretended for so long that he didn't feel alone.
But he did.
Half of him was missing and had been for many lifetimes.
It's time we talked.
Still nothing. He let out growl.
Fine!
He lay on his bedroll and stared up at the clear sky.
It was cold and the frost in the grass had already begun to creep closer to the fire. He added more wood to keep it at bay, closing his eyes and drifting into slumber.
He sat on a hill, ash falling from the sky like snow. It was twilight. The Beast was sitting next to him, staring out at their home realm ripped apart by never-ending war.
‘This is the only way we can talk properly now,’ the Beast said, ‘if you truly want to.’
