‘Why did Gaila do all this?’ Rye asked. ‘Why now? What happened? Do you know that as well?’
‘You already know most of it. She wanted to protect the babe, and you. If she set one foot here, you three would die immediately so she waited until the last possible moment, after Ceres had shown his final hand and she knew his plans.’
She looked away and Nyx wondered what it was that she was holding back, for there was something. He was sure of it.
She shifted in their arms. ‘Ceres came for her not long ago, brought his Liathmor to take her to a fold he created deep in the Dark Realms. He thought that by sacrificing Gaila, he could destroy the Light Realm once and for all, but he needed her to open the gate for him to do it. She escaped his fold through another bridge into the Dark Realms. From there, she used the last of her power to open a breach here to send me to you. But I must have hurt my head during the journey. I woke up in the forest and then that slaver found me.’
‘Why not simply send herself? Why did she make herself … you … a human?’ Nyx asked.
‘Because coming here as a god would have broken the agreement with Ceres. The binding magick that stops him from setting foot here would be broken, we would die, and the Light Realm would be open to him,’ Rye answered him.
Elle nodded and got out of the bed. She rolled her neck and stretched her back and then her eyes closed, and she dropped to the floor.
CHAPTER14
THORNE
Thorne was closest and he caught her as she as she fell.
‘What's wrong with her?’ Nyx asked
Thorne let out a soft snort. ‘Perhaps the pleasure of all three of us was just too much for her frail human body.’
‘More likely her magick is returning faster now. Bring her to the bed.’
Thorne put her back under the covers, taking Rye’s place next to her as he got up.
There was a bell ringing in the courtyard. Nyx, the only one of them still fully clothed, went to the door.
‘I'll find out what's going on,’ he said, ‘though we all know it's not going to be fucking good.’
He left the room and closed the door securely behind him.
Thorne held Elle to him, and her eyes fluttered. She put up a hand to touch his face.
‘She was so sorry that she put you here alone,’ she murmured, half-asleep. ‘She wanted to tell you all what was happening, but she couldn't invalidate the agreement with Ceres. She never wanted this for you,’ she said to Thorne. ‘You were here all alone.’ Her lip wobbled and he caught her to him.
‘I had the others if I'd wanted them.’ He clutched her and caressed her cheek. ‘Ceres will pay for all he did to us. If I get a chance to kill him, I promise you I will.’
She pressed closer and kissed him. Moving over him, she sank down on him gently. He let out a groan, his eyes rolling back as she rolled her hips.
He took hold of her as she began to set the pace. He gripped the back of her neck and brought her down for a kiss and she nipped his lip hard, grinning as blood trickled onto his tongue.
‘Little vixen,’ he growled, pushing her over onto her back and widening her legs as far as they'd go. He slapped her mound hard, and she whimpered.
‘Is that what you want?’ he asked.
He took her harder than he had before, ignoring that Rye was still in the room and probably watching them. They'd seen each other with Elle countless times before.
She found her release again, and so did he, grunting as he finished and collapsing next to her again.
‘Are you sated yet, female?’ he asked.
He felt a smile against his neck.
‘Never.’
‘I’m merely a man,’ he teased. ‘Perhaps I won’t be able to keep up with your insatiable appetites.’
