Elle
Elle walked upinto the light, still breathing heavily, her body shaking with the aftermath of the pleasure that Thorne had given her. Her cheeks heated as she passed some of the guards on the way back to the main Library building through the courtyard.
Had they heard her screams? Did they know what she’d just done with Thorne?
Did she care?
She went back up to the mezzanine. They hadn’t been here for more than two days, but it had quickly become her favorite place in the Library. She was able to see the entire floor, all the books on their shelves. There was typically at least one of the other Fourths there at any given time and she enjoyed the company of the other women immensely.
Elle thought on what Thorne had said about Nyx and Rye. The attack on the Camp and the destruction of the Brothers had left them all reeling. She still couldn't believe they'd got out of there without being taken.
But Nyx and Rye … They hadn’t seen the Horde since Gaila had liberated them, saved them.
She frowned. She should remember their stories. Hadn't they told Gaila the specifics of how they’d suffered? Did Gaila not remember? Again, Elle was met with the reality that there was another part of her that she could never hope to understand fully, not in her present human state at any rate. Her mind simply couldn't fathom Gaila’s motivations, her relationships with the Brothers. She’d clearly loved them or else she wouldn't have done everything she'd done to save them, but Gaila was an eternal creature and Elle wasn't.
Lost in thought, she took the steps up into the mezzanine slowly, finding some of the other Fourths speaking in quiet tones around the table. None of their units were present and, though she quite liked all the men she’d met so far, she was glad it was just them for the moment. She found their presences comforting on a level she didn’t really understand.
She saw Vie, speaking with a woman she hadn't met before and gave her a small smile. The witch immediately beckoned her over.
‘This is Lana,’ she said. ‘She and her unit don’t tend to stay with the Army much.’ She leant forward. ‘They tried to kill her once,’ she said in a loud whisper, ‘so they weren’t with the Camp when the attack happened.’
Elle's eyes widened. ‘They tried to kill you? Why?’
Lana cast a look at Vie. ‘It’s a long story,’ she said. ‘Vie tells me you're from the Mount.’
Elle’s eyes snapped to Vie, and the other woman looked apologetic. ‘I’m sorry. I didn’t realize it was meant to be a secret. Your aura is similar to Bastian’s, and we all know he hails from there.’
‘I suppose it isn’t a secret, really,’ Elle said, not sure what else to say.
But instead of looking surprised, Lana merely nodded. ‘I went to the Mount myself once,’ she said, ‘though I don’t recall much about it now. I remember Bastian being there and I think … someone else was as well, but I don’t …’ she trailed off then shook her head. ‘What were we speaking of?’
Elle frowned. ‘The Mount.’
How could the woman have forgotten?
‘Yes, of course,’ Lana laughed. ‘I’m a bit tired. Forgive me. The Mount.’
Lana gave Vie a look and Elle watched the witch’s cheeks redden.
‘It had to be done that way,’ she muttered.
Lana's eyes narrowed. ‘You paralyzed me and fucked me with a great stone cock.’
Vie glanced at Elle and then away, her face now bright red with embarrassment. ‘All magicks are based in something. For witches, it’s nature. For the fae, their own essences. For the Brothers, its blood. But God magick is based in carnal pleasure,’ she said. ‘I was trying to save your life the best way I knew how … and it worked, didn’t it?’
Lana grinned. ‘I know. I jest. You did save my life and I am grateful, though you’ve seen more of me than anyone else save my unit!’
She banged her shoulder into Vie’s in a friendly manner and Vie looked instantly relieved, though still uncomfortable and Elle got the impression that the witch wasn’t used to having such friends.
Behind her, Elle heard several pairs of boots trudging up the narrow stairs to the mezzanine. Three Brothers from one of the other units entered the mezzanine and she recognized them from the hill where there’d appeared the night of the Camp’s destruction. Eve’s unit.
Eve smiled at them, going over to them a bit shyly. The one with the long, blond hair that matched Eve’s drew her close for a kiss, but then all three pairs of their eyes fell on Elle, and they stared at her in something akin to awe.
One of them said something to Eve that Elle couldn’t hear, and the blonde woman looked back at her.
‘That’s Elle,’ she said. ‘You must have seen her the other night when I brought her and the others through the breach.’
‘We didn’t notice her,’ the tallest one murmured.
