‘He wanted you,’ Fie guessed, his hands forming fists at his sides.

She nodded. ‘I was his reward for putting on a good show,’ she murmured. ‘I may not have been in my right mind when you found me by the waterfall, but … with you was nothing like it was with him.’

The darkness in her eyes made him wish he could take this pain, banish it from her. Whatever this man she spoke of had done, it had left its mark on her as keenly as a blade on her flesh.

‘What would you like me to do?’ he asked, taking her chin in his fingers so that she would look at him.

She bit her lip and he almost groaned aloud.

‘Take off your shirt,’ she said, sounding excited and thrilled. She wasn’t enthralled, just intrigued.

He did as she told him, pulling it off in one swift movement and basking in the attention she paid to his body with her eyes.

Her breath quickened at the sight of him. He kept his face carefully blank, not wanting to scare her. This was for her.

‘Your breeches?’ It was a question, not a command, but he did as she asked, taking off his boots as well, and standing in front of her so that she could see him in full.

‘Would you like me to turn?’ he asked quietly, giving her a quick grin when she looked shy.

She nodded tentatively, and he turned for her in a slow circle so that she could see all of him.

She stepped closer, and then froze.

‘You can touch,’ he said, taking her hand and laying it on his chest. Eve’s fingers felt the contours of his muscles, the warmth of his skin and her other hand joined it, caressing his shoulders and down his corded forearms.

Her fingers interlaced with his for a moment and he felt their connection, the bonds between them flare to life. She felt it too. She closed her eyes on a small sigh.

‘It's different with you,’ she murmured, her hands leaving his to trail up his arms again to his chest and then down his abdomen. He sucked in a breath, and she looked down to find his staff already hard. The tip glistened with a bead of moisture. Her hand moved toward it, and he gritted his teeth as she touched him, her thumb swirling over him.

‘Lie on the bed,’ she said quietly, and he did.

Eve took off the dress that she'd been given and knelt between his legs, her hands moving up his calves to slide over his hips.

She stretched herself over him, connecting their bodies. She lay her head next to his and looked at him, uncertainty in her countenance.

‘Is this all right?’ she asked.

Fie nodded, his arms coming around to hold her to him. He wanted her, but at this moment he didn't mind if they stayed like this. He'd not felt so close to anyone for a long, long time. He hadn't realized how lonely he'd been with his Brothers always at odds with each other.

‘Would you tell me about yourself?’ she asked, eyes closing.

‘I was born here in the Underhill. I stayed here until my magick came.’

‘You have magick as well?’

‘Yes, but I'm not very good at conjuring.’ He shifted in the bed to get more comfortable. ‘When I was old enough to take care of myself, I left for the fae courts. I come from a family of well-known performers. Faire folk. I grew up tumbling, making people laugh, doing tricks for the other children, riding horses.’ He grinned. ‘Amazing others with my clever, entertaining skills.’

‘And your family?’ she asked.

‘Both my parents were killed in a Dark Realm. They were performing at a faire, and it was attacked by the Horde. I have a brother. Rogue. He was in the Underhill.’ Fie sighed. ‘My mother should have been here, but she left to meet up with my father at the faire.’ Fie smiled at the memory. ‘They loved to perform together when they could, but she was slain with him in the attack.’ He looked at her, her eyes still closed, but she wasn’t asleep. ‘Rogue was meant to be safe here,’ he whispered.

‘Where is everyone else?’ Eve asked.

‘You mean the adults? The only males here at the time were a small band of warriors. The mothers and other females who lived here to care for the children went to seek refuge in the capital as per the ancient agreements in place between Kitore and the Underhill when the portals began to fail, but they were betrayed and killed there.’

‘The children weren’t taken with them?’

‘No one can remember.’
