‘No,’ she said defensively, but his eyes narrowed as if he thought there was something she wasn't telling him. It seemed as if he wanted to ask something, but he wasn't sure of the words to say. Instead, he closed his mouth.

‘The bargain you made with me…,’ she trailed off.

‘Yes?’

‘Does it … does it still stand even after …’

‘After all the trouble that you've been? Aye, female, it still stands. You help us. We'll let you go.’

‘And this … this thing that you've done to me, this binding, it can be undone?’

He nodded once.

‘So, I do this thing that you need me to do, and you let me go. I have your word?’

‘You have my word as a fae,’ he said.

Her eyes widened. ‘Fae?’

He looked surprised, assessing again. ‘You didn't know.’

‘I've never met a fae,’ she admitted quietly. ‘I thought you'd look different from a human.’

He walked closer to her, and his face changed abruptly. His eyes became violet. His ears, pointed. His teeth, sharper. He looked slightly taller too, and broader.

She was at least able to stifle the gasp that came from her. ‘Is that all?’

‘Aye. The fae aren't too different from humans.’

She nodded stupidly, not sure what to say.

‘Fie will come for you in a bit. He'll take you to bathe.’

She nodded again, ridiculously excited about the prospect of another bath.

His features changed back to human.

‘Does it hurt?’ she blurted out and then wondered if she shouldn’t ask. Maybe she shouldn’t find out too much about them.

‘Does what hurt? To change my face?’ He barked a laugh. ‘It's just a glamor to keep us from being noticed here. There are many who do not like the fae in this realm. Donning it and taking it off is as easy as breathing, walking, eating.’

His gaze moved over her body, and she tensed. Would he use her again so soon? The Bull was usually made to wait except when she’d displeased Talik in some way. But perhaps these men – these fae – would not give her the same consideration.

She took a step back, thought better of it and took a step forward again. She would not let them see her fear. Drax still stood in front of her. He hadn't moved, but he looked like he was trying to understand something. Perhaps he enjoyed her discomfort. Perhaps he could tell that she was afraid, though she hoped not.

‘What is it? Ask your question,’ he said.

‘What else can the fae do?’

He shrugged. ‘Some have magick they can use to conjure. Some don't. Some have gifts. Visions. Sometimes, I can see the future or the past. I saw you. That was how we found you.’

She looked up at him quickly and then looked away. ‘I dreamed of you as well,’ she admitted.

‘Of me?’ he looked surprised.

‘And the other two sometimes,’ she said, not sure why she was telling him.

‘What did you dream?’ he asked.
