Under the chafing rub of my thong, which is just inflaming the situation worse at this point, my pussy ripples and opens like a hungry mouth, ravenous for that wicked cock.

Fuck.

Me.

Hard.

“Yeah, well.” I clear my throat, because my voice is dripping with sex. “My IUD is—was—molded plastic.” You better believe I looked that shit right up after I shifted back. “And, for your information, the only reason I’m not totally freaking out about my BC right now is because I added a backup method after I started hooking up with my warlocks.”

Ireallydon’t know why I’m telling him all this. How do I even trust any intel he gives me? Doesn’t he have, like, an ulterior motive?

“I have told you I do not lie.” Above his intense eyes, his brows rush together in a ferocious frown. “I will never lie to you, of all creatures living.”

Reading my mind again through this bond I don’t want.

Double fuck.

“Yeah, well, I get shots from the Academy clinic. That’s my backup method.” I might as well go ahead and ask. “You gonna tell me that’s not copacetic anymore either?”

“I… do not know this word.” His head ducks, like maybe he’s embarrassed by his less than perfect English. He doesn’t need to be, because it gets the job done, even if he sounds a little stilted.

My heart softens for him a tiny bit.

“Copacetic just means okay,” I tell him.

“Ah.” Carefully he repeats the new word, his forehead furrowing in a way that is very slightly cute as he concentrates. “Poisons, potions, medicines, these effects are not undone by the shift. So these… shots? They should remain… copacetic.”

I’m still suspicious, so I probe for more. “Even with this superheat? Even… with you? Assuming we ever did anything, I mean, just speaking hypothetically.”

“Yes and yes.” His lids drop over his crocodile stare. “In order to conceive our clutch, these shots must first end.”

“Thank fuck for that.” I heave a sigh and settle back in the water. “No offense, but those shots are my new best friend. I’m not into conceiving our, uh, clutch right now. Like I already told you.”

He sinks down too, watching me carefully, eyes gleaming with reptilian interest. He’s mirroring me like a damn predator.

“That is not what your dragon is telling mine. She is nearly ready to rise, my Zara.” His head dips, yet his crafty gaze holds mine. “But your shots, they will guard you from conceiving. If that is what you fear.”

“I don’tfear. I just don’twant. Not right now, anyway.” My voice ratchets tight with frustration. “Look, obviously I get that I’ll have to produce the next queen at some point. And maybe she’ll be a dragon queen, and that’ll help your clan out of a pickle. I get that you need more dragons, okay?”

Agitation crackles through me, and I make a real effort to rein it in, calling on all those control skills Lucius has been teaching me.

Because I don’t like to think what’ll happen if we’re both in the water when I summon lightning.

My dragon—I meanthedragon, he’s definitely not mine or anything—crouches in the water and just waits me out.

He can be patient, this guy, when he wants to be.

I dial down the volume with a sigh. “It’s just I got a lot riding on me right now, Maxim. I’m supposed to save the arcane races from this extinction event, and I still don’t know how, except it has something to do with my witchcraft and being a powerful queen once Messalina kicks the bucket. I dunno, maybe the whole mess has something to do with all the inbreeding. All twelve clans are doing it to preserve what little witchcraft we have left. But me? I’m not into that. I feel like maybe we need to stop it.”

“You will learn. I will help,” he says fiercely.

He’s still hunkered low in the water. But his shoulders peek above the surface. My gaze snags on the pale scars that lick around his sun-bronzed skin from behind. I noticed those scars back in Vegas, but there was way too much going on at the time (what with my snake Hulking out and trying to kill the guy) to pursue it.

Now a dark suspicion arrows through me.

“Hey.” I scowl. “Come over here for a sec.”

He sinks lower, the way a hunting croc would do, until he’s submerged to his nose again. His dragon eyes are wary, but he glides slowly toward me.
