And the truth of the Lord endures forever.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and forever,
and for generations of generations.
Amen
Sophia bowed her head, before gliding back to Kael. They both sat in chairs placed between the piano and the harp.
Elizabeth began playing “Pachelbel’s Canon in D.”
Edith couldn’t help moving her head a bit in time to the music, which she thought the most beautiful in the world. Nathaniel had also loved Pachelbel’s Canon, and she hadn’t played the piece since his death. But today brought back all her earlier delight in the music. After four stanzas, the cellist joined in—Delia’s cue to move down the aisle.
Another four measures and Edith followed. She held the bouquet with both hands and matched her steps to the music, dipping her head to acknowledge some of her friends.
Two thirds of the way up the aisle, Edith saw Cai on the groom’s side, sitting next toFarfarandMormor. Her heart lurched, and then danced.
* * *
Music started playing—the piano so low and beautiful that Cai closed his eyes to better absorb each note, soon joined by the cello. A nervous anticipation or something lodged at the base of his spine. He found himself clenching his jaw.Where was she?
At last, he turned to look down the aisle and saw Edith slowly approach, nodding now and then at acquaintances.
He thought she’d looked elegant before, but today, Edith looked like a princess. No, a queen in some kind of low-cut, patterned gold satin edged with pink. The smallest of hats, more like a pouf of lace and ribbon crowned her dark hair.
The sight of Edith was all his, a memory to cherish. He looked his fill, knowing tonight was the last time he’d see her.
Cai expected to see Edith wearing those ridiculous, shoulder balloon sleeves that seemed so popular now. Instead, pink gauze puffed off her shoulders over a flutter of gold lace, leaving her arms bare to the tops of her long gloves. A sash of pink satin emphasized her narrow waist. He wanted to slide his palms down the pearly skin of her arms, wrap his hands around her waist, and pull her close.
Her gaze caught his, held a few seconds longer than for politeness’s sake.
He winked and sent her a cocky grin.
To his surprise, she flashed a smile in return, before looking ahead.
In that moment, he resolved to coax a waltz out of her and then spirit her off someplace private and kiss her. The plan made him smile.
Bear elbowed him in the side. “Mighty pretty, that one,” he whispered.
Pretty couldn’t come close to describing Edith Grayson.
“She seems to like you. Might not find one that fine in Concord.”
Doubt I could find one like her anywhere.
A sad weight settled in his belly. The woman is a jewel to grace elegant Boston ballrooms, not a log house on a dusty ranch.
Still, I will have that dance.
CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Cai smiled at her and winked.
Her heart pounding, Edith held his gaze for a few seconds before glancing away, feeling a blush rising in her face. Even looking forward toward her brother and son didn’t cool her cheeks.
Caleb’s eyes were bright with obvious emotion. He nodded at Edith, his gaze saying what words could not.
