That’s not?—

I hurled myself at him, teeth and claws bared. Kendrick took off like a damn rocket.

Chickenshit.

I turned the other direction to head him off. The nest was a round property, and he couldn’t hide forever. I raced off, the cool grass meeting my paws doing nothing to dispel my anger. Rain made it slippery, but my claws let me gain traction.

He came sharply into view and we crashed together. A scream rent the air, his bellow of pain blending with the sound. Logan’s warm weight struck us. Her arm between my teeth and the shriek that followed sobered every panicked emotion right out of me. Another weight followed, the panthers dogpiling on me so I collapsed against the grass, Velda and Haru taking down Kendrick.

Logan sobbed in the grass, the scent of her blood permeating the air despite the rain. The monster wailed, shooting tension through all of us. Her pain echoed through me, making it difficult to breathe, all the panic in her cells flooding down to me.

Let me the fuck up. She’s hurt.

The two panthers together were enough to pin me, especially when Caden’s fangs held me by the throat. You’ve done enough.

I wilted. Sinking my claws into Kendrick had been deeply satisfying, but all of that had blinked away. Seth moved over to Logan, his cheek softly brushing hers.

I’d bitten my mate. She was hurt because of me. The tips of Kendrick’s antlers were red, the rain making it flow down in rivulets.

Dr. Atling and Sarah flew out of the nest, a pair of boar shifters following them to hoist Logan onto a stretcher and get her inside.

“What is the matter with both of you?” Dr. Atling hissed. “I’m exercising my right as physician of the nest to put the two of you on medical leave. Get your asses up to your suites and stay there. We’ll be up to attend to you once we’ve finished with Logan.”

She had never used that power before. Maybe she was right. The stress had already gotten to people here and I wasn’t immune.

I’m sorry.

Logan gave no reply, her whimpers burrowing into my chest as they took her away. Blood painted her lips.

Fuck.

What had I done?

Logan groaned, squeezing her eyes shut against the blinding lights in the infirmary.

“Easy now,” Sarah crooned. “We have to clean out these wounds.”

She buried her face against the table and screamed as they applied the antiseptic.

Seth offered himself for comfort and she got a solid grip on his neck ruff, holding on like her life depended on it.

You threw yourself between shifters fighting again, Seth told her. Velda scared the shit out of all of us when you bolted.

I wasn’t proud of screaming out for all of them when Logan had gotten away from me. She’d even taken the stairs so I couldn’t catch her waiting for the elevators. For a few brief moments I’d only worried about facing Yelena’s wrath, but that had disappeared in a heartbeat when this beautiful and stupid witch had thrown herself into the fight.

“You have to stop doing this,” Dr. Atling sighed, examining Logan’s injuries. “Oh, gods.”

Caden appeared in my field of vision, gently taking Logan’s hand. “What is it?” he asked.

“We’re going to need to do surgery. Sarah, prep the OR. Protector Velda put out a page for anyone with medical experience.”

“On it.”

“Shit.” Dr. Atling rushed about.

It probably wasn’t a good sign when your doctor was swearing.

The scent of copper overrode Logan’s usual earthy florals. “Am I going to die?”
