Raquel sat there as rage filled her, but it had also filled me, so if she wanted to go toe for toe, I was ok with that too. “Bitch!I don’t know. You got me and my daughter here, and I know nothing. Remember, he was cheating on me. For all I know, Horace ran far away!”

“My baby is lying in that hospital because that muhfucka couldn’t follow rules!”

“That’s your problem. Let us go!” she roared.

I rushed into her face.“No!” I barked back, scaring her.

The door to the brownstone opened. Sergio swiftly came in, and behind him were double the number of people at the hospital. His expensive shoes clapped on the floor as he emerged from the dark hall into our space. He snapped his fingers, and his guys spread around the living room, pointing their guns at Raquel. He pulled a cigar from his pocket, bit the end off, and fiddled in his pocket again, removing a gold lighter. He placed the cigar back in his mouth and lit it.

The Devil had surfaced, and I felt fear coursing through me. Sergio pointed at me with the cigar between his fingers and then at Raquel. “Thameka, I tried to let you handle the situation, and ju failed. My sweet pea is lying in there, and ju doing nothing about it.”

I ran my hand over my stomach. “Sergio, I—”

He closed his eyes and shook his head. “Aht, aht. Ju saying nothing,” he paused as he turned to Raquel. “Ju are a pretty lady. Smart. Ju have a daughter, jes?”

Raquel nodded.

“Me too. Now, I need to know who did this to her. So please, help me or I cannot help ju.”

I watched Raquel as she knew she couldn’t just talk shit to Sergio. That fear that captured me had also gotten to her. The longer I watched her the more I knew she didn’t know shit. The good thing to do would be to step in, but I knew Sergio was at the point of no return, and stopping him was not an option.

Raquel’s eyes closed slowly as tears spilled from her, “Please don’t hurt my baby, please,” she whimpered. “I-I don’t know anything, I swear.”

A sinister laugh roared from Sergio. He glanced around at his men as he shrugged his shoulders. He turned to leave. “The Devil has arrived.” He said before walking back out of the house.

We were at a point of no return. My eyes frantically bounced on everyone. I stretched out my hand for Raquel.“Wait!”

Rat-a tat-tat-tat-rat-tat tat! Rat-a tat-tat-tat-rat-tat tat!

DIO

Beep! Beep! Beep!

My thoughts were becoming restless. I was still stuck in this place and felt like there was no way out. So much regret filled me that I knew tears had to be coming from my eyes.

“What do you feel?” Ace’s voice came through.

“Ace, man, I don’t know.”

He laughed.“Dio, you know, but for whatever reason, you’re choosing not to express your true feelings, and it’s eating you alive.”

The fact that Ace was still a part of my consciousness in this in-between made me mad. I wasn’t mad at him, but mad that the problem I was avoiding was still lingering. I couldn’t shake him. I wanted to come out of this normally. I didn’t want the delusions, I didn’t want the depression, I didn’t want inner battle. All I wanted was to be like everybody fucking else and deep down I knew I was nothing like everyone else.

“Dio,” I heard a familiar voice, but it wasn’t on the outside.

The voice I heard was just as clear as Ace’s.

“Asia?”

“Yes, Dio, it’s me.”

“I don’t want to talk to you.”

“But you have no choice. Remember how you gave me no choice when you put that gun to my head? You took me from my kids, Dio, why?”

Anger rose in me. I didn’t want to face Asia. I did what I did to her because she had broken the code. She almost got a nigga killed.

“Dio.”
