As soon as Diamond moved Chevy ran up on Beans, “The difference between me and you is I can put a bullet in the Merciers and not think twice, because I don’t give a fuck about them can you say the same thing, huh, nigga?”

Beans didn’t say anything.

Chevy winked. “That’s what I thought. Y’all niggas are dismissed.”

As everyone began to leave, I walked up to Freckles, grabbed her wrist, and spun her my way. “Freckles,” I paused. “We need to talk.”

She rolled her eyes before letting out a breath of agitation. “We need to talk Zeus or fuck? Because I tried talking to you and you cut me off, remember? So again, are we talking or fucking?”

I smacked my lips, “Come to the house,” I told her as I walked off. I knew she was mad, and I was ok with that, but as long as that ring was on her finger, it gave me hope, and I was going to run with every inch of it. The feeling was that Freckles and I were about to be on some toxic shit and that is what scared me.

DIO

I tried sleeping, but the thought of Mars crossed my mind one too many times. Of course, being a better person for her was the idea before approaching her again, but it was like being stuck in that in-between. I couldn’t take it. I got up from my bed, stood in the window, and stared into her room. Her curtain was slightly open while she sat on the stool in front of a canvas, doing what she loved the most. I wondered if she could love me as much as she loved painting. What was she thinking about? Her wrist gently stroked back and forth.

I found myself becoming fixated on her so much that I couldn’t pull my eyes away. Before I stepped onto my balcony, I grabbed my phone and chair. I took in the night air as I rolled myself a blunt and lit it. My eyes were still watching Mars as I inhaled and exhaled the smoke. My body relaxed in the chair when I decided to dial up her number.

She glanced down at her phone and hesitated before she picked it up.“Hello?”

“Come spend some time with me,” I told her.

She glanced around her room. “You want me to come over?”

Inhale, then exhale.

“Nah, go on the balcony. Grab you a blanket because it’s nippy out.”

“Nippy? Really, Dio?”

I laughed. “Yes, really.”

I watched her as she grabbed a light blanket and came outside, then stared directly at me. “Dio?”

“Sit down and chill. It’s just me and you, Mars.”

Inhale, then exhale.

She did as I asked. We stared at each other without exchanging words. I placed the phone on speaker and set it on my lap. “How are you feeling?”

Inhale, then exhale.

“Um, I’m ok. What about you?”

“I’m good, now. Thinking about you.”

She curled up in the chair and got comfortable. Although we were near each but seemed so far away I still had a good look at her pretty ass face. It was the peace I had been missing the entire time I was stuck in the dark. It was one of the driving forces for me to get out of there.

Her soft giggles came through the phone. “Thinking about me, why?”

“Why not Mars, you know you're my star. You’re worth missing.”

Inhale, then exhale.

The phone fell silent, then she came in, “It’s nice out. The stars are out tonight.”

“Them stars straight, but I’m looking at one.”

She had gone from looking up to me. “Boy, please.”
