I heard my dad murmur ‘fuck,’ and I had to agree. But the one good thing out of it, the dog quieted.

We all walked through the back door, including the Chief, and in front of Satan’s cage stood Freak. I wasn’t surprised to see Freak there, but I was surprised the dog sat and listened. The dog was the typical breed of choice for dogfighting. The pit had a few battle scars, mainly around his head and face. He was all black and pure muscle. And I wasn’t sure the thick chain and choker collar would hold him if he really wanted to break free.

I hadn’t even realized that Freak had left the group outside and came into the building until I heard him yell at the dog.

“Got to admit when I heard him yell that I thought it was a joke until it suddenly got quiet.”

“Prez, you know this isn’t going to end well,” Crank said.

“Come on, no one sees the humor in that statement coming from Freak. Truer words and all.” Moose had lowered his voice before commenting, so Freak wouldn’t hear him.

“Mark my words, we aren’t getting out of here without that dog,” Pinch griped.

“Pinch might be right. I can guess why they call him Satan, but Beast would have been a better fit,” I said as I looked over at Freak. He was squatted down in front of the cage talking to the dog while Shock stood off to the side.

“Well, all I’m saying is my ass is never going in the basement again,” Tram said.

We’d all come backto the clubhouse for a well-deserved beer and had left the Chief and his men to their job.

When I got to the clubhouse, I’d called Raven and checked on Halo. He was going to be okay. They patched him up and he was resting. I didn’t tell her everything that went down, but I did tell her the part about the fighting dog and that Halo was probably hurt being used as bait. Raven mentioned the stray Doc had patched up that ended up not making it, and we surmised it had more than likely been in same situation as Halo had been through. Instead of crying, Raven had gotten mad. By the end of the conversation with her, Reagan was finally getting her dog, and Halo would get a home.

I tipped my bottle of beer, drinking the last of it. I gave a chin lift to Latch when he handed me another.

“Prez, you have to tell us how you got the Chief to go along with it,” Moose asked, and my dad smiled.

“I told him we had a vet in house that would make sure the dog had his shots and she’d evaluate him to make sure his rehabilitation was working. And I told him our local dog shelter didn’t have the room, and that even if they did, they weren’t equipped to deal with what the dog needed. And instead of putting the animal down, he should at least be given a chance to be rehabilitated. So he agreed we could take him.”

I snorted. “Yeah, I’m sure you telling him that we were leaving, and good luck trying to get the dog out of that building even with animal control’s help had nothing to do with his decision.”

“It might have swayed him to our side a little more. Considering Freak was the only one it would let near him.” Wild Bill grinned.

I held my beer bottle in the air. “And that’s how Beast came to be a part of the Haven MC.”
