I heard Moose’s voice in the background as he bitched.

“Not a drop. And I have perfect vision.”

“Quit dicking around. We need to discuss the Widows and figure out where the hell they are. So if you’d join us, we could get this shit over with.”

“I at least know where one of them is.”

“You spotted one of the Widows. Wait, you said you’re at the property next to Doc’s?”

“Yeah. He’s at the back end of the property holed up in an outbuilding. Could be more inside, but I laid eyes on the one.”

“Guess we know why they haven’t been spotted in town.”

“There are no vehicles here. And none in front of the outbuilding I’m looking at unless they’re pulled around back of it.”

“Hell, stay put and out of sight in case more of those assholes are inside. I’m surprised they didn’t hear your bike.”

“Don’t know. Depending on the building, it could be can’t hear when you’re inside.”

“I’m going to call the Chief. I’ll get back to you.”

I hit the button on my phone and slipped it back in my vest pocket. I wanted to move my bike out of sight in case more Widows showed up. But if I saw movement, they would, too. I also couldn’t believe they’d been that close. Christ, I’d come to Doc’s place every day for the last two weeks.

My phone vibrated and pulled it out. “Yeah.”

“Me and the boys will be there soon. Will stash the bikes somewhere close and walk in. They might not have heard a single bike, but no way will they not hear a group.”

“Only you six coming?”

“No, Shock and Freak are with us.”

“Do I want to know?”

“Some things just can’t be answered. They’re coming in the van.”

“Well, with Shock and Freak, it will be interesting if nothing else. Especially with the Chief and some of his guys.”

“They’ll be behind us. Asked for us to keep watch and make sure the Widows didn’t split before he assembled his officers and got out there.”

“Fucking awesome.”

Dad chuckled. “See you shortly,” he said and disconnected. I leaned against the tree and waited, watching the area and wondered how the dog Raven and Doc took to the clinic was doing.

The whistle I heardlet me know the brothers were close. If I focused on each sound and separated them, I faintly made out footsteps. Sometimes it bothered me that I was one of the few members of the club who’d never been in the military. The only one who had zilch military training that sat at the table. It wasn’t often, but there were times I’d felt like they shared a deeper connection with each other because of the military. Then I’d see Freak and Shock have episodes where they thought they were back in Vietnam and Roach sitting staring at nothing. I’d even walked in my dad’s house and found him sleeping on the couch caught in a nightmare.

So yeah, they shared a deeper connection, but to have it, you had to deal with PTSD, and I’d pass—life was hard enough without it. And I had nothing but respect for the strength they had to fight that shit every day.

“Wonder what the inside of the house looks like?” Tram said as they came into view.

“Anything like the outside and demolition is a better option,” Pinch said, then he took the spot on the other side of the tree from me. “Spot any more?”

“No, and the one went back inside and hasn’t come out again.”

“Why don’t we do a little recon around the building? Can’t hear shit this far away,” Moose suggested. I agreed with him. I’d thought about it while I waited, and nothing was going on around the outside of the building.

“Not our show. We are only on standby with the cops,” Dad said, looking toward the driveway. “And it looks like the wait for them is over.”

The Chief didn’t even bother staying out of sight. He drove his cruiser to where we were standing and rolled down the window. The other two police vehicles headed toward the outbuilding.
