“There’s more?”
“I know it’s a lot, but I’ve missed so much...and I want him to like coming here.”
“Oh, Reed. Buying him things. You didn’t have to do anything to get Ry to want to spend time with you. Showing him what you have,” I laid my hand over his heart, “in here will do it. Spending time with him. Letting him get to know you. And you’ve gotten a good start on those. You’ve made time for him every day.”
“Thanks, Raven. You’ve done a good job raising him. He’s a great kid. And I enjoyed every minute I spent with him this week.”
“I’m glad.”
“Well, what the hell am I supposed to do about this room now? Christ, what was I thinking?” He ran his fingers through his hair and then started laughing. “Damn salesman saw my ass coming.”
“Yes, he did. You probably made his month in commission.”
“I’m giving you a heads up, Raven. If the kid says one smartass thing about this room. I might just drown him in the pool.”
“Joking aside, it’s an awesome room. Ry will love it. But seriously, take the mini-fridge out.”
“Yeah, I will. That really put the room over the top.”
“Okay, we’ll go with that.” I chuckled and then stopped and looked at Reed. “What did you mean by I won’t like what else you got?”
“You going to be madall night?” Reed asked as he took off his helmet. We’d switched the truck for the bike when we left his house.
“I’m not mad. I’m scared he’s going to get hurt.”
“Raven, are you scared because of how your husband died?”
“It wasn’t his first time on an ATV, Reed, and look what happened.”
“Do you think I’m going to let Ry take off on the bike without any instructions or supervision? I wanted to get him something special for his thirteen birthday. He’ll be officially a teenager. And I got the bike as an early present because we’ll still have a few decent days for him to enjoy it before it’s too cold. Babe, you can’t let your fear transfer to him.”
“I know. But he doesn’t ride unless you are around to supervise. He has to stay in sight, so if something does happen you’ll see it and be able to get to him.”
“Deal.”
“You don’t have any more surprises, do you? Because after seeing the bedroom setup, then you opened the garage door and I saw the dirt bike sitting on the trailer—I’m not sure I can take any more surprises,” I said as we reached the door to the clubhouse.
“No more surprises,” Reed said, then held the door open for me and I walked inside.
“You’re such a liar,” I said and stopped in my tracks.
