“Hey, brat. Listening from the hallway?” I glared at her as she pulled a can of soda from the fridge, then grabbed the bag of chips I’d been eating off the counter.

“Nope, because takin’ the time to eavesdrop would mean I care about what you have to say,” Sami said, then shifted to face our dad. “Carly’s coming over later, and we’re going to watch movies. Is it alright if she stays the weekend?”

“Sure thing, princess.”

“And that is my cue. I’m gonna leave you with the pain in the butt duo and head back to the clubhouse and enjoy the celebration.” My dad smiled, and Sami stuck her tongue out at me.

“Enjoy yourself. Not every day you get patched in. And don’t let some of the brothers put you to work.”

I chuckled. “I won’t. I did help with the setup, though, and the grill already had sizzling meat on it when I left. You sure you don’t wanna at least ride over and grab something to eat?”

“Nah, I’ve got some files to look over that will keep me busy. It’s why I didn’t stick around after the patch-in. I’ll throw some dinner together for the girls and me later. I can’t leave Sami and Carly here alone to fend for themselves.”

“We’re not babies, and why can’t we go to the clubhouse with you and eat? It’s not like we’re not there all the time.”

“You and Carly have got no business at the clubhouse on Friday nights,” my dad said, and I smirked when Sami huffed. As her older brother, it was my duty to pick on her any chance I got.

“That’s right, brat, Friday night parties are for the grownups.Childrenare only allowed when there is a get-together for families.” When Sami’s eyes narrowed and she flipped me off, I laughed.

“Knock it off. Both of you.” My dad looked between us and shook his head. “Stop picking on your sister,” he said to me, then looked at Sami, who was sneering. “You, young lady, are not to be at the clubhouse on Friday nights. Period. And what have I told you about using the middle finger?”

“Yeah, yeah. I’m a girl. It isn’t lady-like. Blah, blah,” Sami said, rolled her eyes as only a girl hitting her teens could, then headed out of the kitchen. “At least I don’t use any of the bad language I’ve heard my whole life. Besides, it’s not like Friday nights are the only time boobs are flashed, or a penis is whipped out,” she added before she was out of hearing distance.

I watched my dad’s whole body stiffen. “Sami, your ass better be joking!” Our dad yelled and received giggles as an answer. His head dropped until his chin rested on his chest, then after a couple of deep breaths, he looked at me. “Goddammit, if I make it until she’s an adult with all my hair and what little sanity I have left, I want a damn party thrown for me. A big fucking one with a never-ending supply of booze until I can’t remember a damn thing.”

I snorted. “You got it, old man. Maybe you should havethetalk with her. Again.” I couldn’t refrain from raggin’ my dad.

He swiped his hand down his face. “Sure, ‘cause that shit was so comfortable the first time around.”

“Hey, I lived through it. Twice. I was ten the first time, and then for whatever reason, you felt the need to cover everything again a few years later.”

“It’s different between fathers and daughters. No man wants to discuss anything with his daughter that has to do with them turning into a woman. He doesn’t want to acknowledge that one day he won’t be the only man in her life.”

“You do realize the chance of Sami ending up with a biker is almost a given since she’s growing up around them.”

“Don’t damn go there. I try to keep those thoughts from entering my head right now. I’ll deal with it when and if I’m faced with it and not a second before. The pool of denial I swim in is warm. Bad enough when we moved here and you were spending a lot of time at the clubhouse. I couldn’t watch you twenty-four/seven, and the hang-arounds started looking at you as a fresh piece of meat when you were barely fourteen. Your hormones where surfacing big time and I didn’t need their hormones added to the mix. So yeah, it was easier to have a sit down with you versus dealing with your mama. Thank God she never noticed the looks those women threw your way. No doubt in my mind she would have clawed their eyes out.” I watched the shadows move into his eyes, and the expression on his face change as it always did with the mention of my mother.

Mom had fought hard against the cancer that worked its way through her body, and in the end, when it finally won, my dad was left with two kids to raise. Dealing with her death had been an adjustment to the three of us. However, even with the club a heavy weight on my dad’s shoulders, he spent as much time as possible with Sami and me.

“I have to say, I didn’t mind the attention from the women.” I wasn’t able to keep the smirk away when I looked at my dad. Harassing him to lighten the mood was better than facing his sadness.

“I just bet your ass you didn’t mind. I’m not so old I don’t remember how teenage hormones take over leaving most males stupid. Don’t forget I grew up in this club with scantily dressed women walking around every day and some with no issue of turning a teenage boy into a man.”

“Weren’t you thankful for several of ‘em’s lack of morals.” I grinned as my dad shook his head.

“Get out of here. Go celebrate. Just be careful. Okay?”

“I will. I’ll stay at the clubhouse if I need to. Try not to let Sami and Carly drive you nuts.” I walked out of the kitchen smiling all the way to the front door as I listened to my dad gripe about girls turning into women and how he was more than likely going to spend his later years in prison for murder. He was still bitching as I pulled the door closed behind me.

Once outside, I mounted my bike and headed in the direction of the clubhouse. The party would be a way for me to wash the remainder of my mood away.

Haven MC had felt like home to me since I walked into the clubhouse with my dad for the first time as a teenager. The club might be struggling with internal issues because some of the members felt my dad shouldn’t be the president, but in my gut, I knew it was temporary. Wild Bill would make sure of it.

My dad left the military and moved us back when my mom was diagnosed with cancer, and his dad, my grandfather, the president of Haven at the time, was shot and killed on a run. It didn’t matter to some that Haven was his legacy. They felt the vice president, Shock, who served under my grandfather, should be holding the president position.

When my dad stepped into the position of president, Shock and the few men who followed him weren’t pleased. Even less pleased now that I’d been patched in.

Cleaning up the club would take time and I was more than ready to do my part to help my dad and brothers get it done. Haven MC would once again be strong and healthy under my dad’s leadership.
