“I do,” Neely said pointedly.

“Do you like them, Sawyer?” Ally asked.

“Nothin’ wrong with them. ‘Cept when you wear ‘em grownups always say to act like a lady,” Sawyer said, and her upper lip curled in disgust.

My lips twitched as I listened to the debate on dresses. It was like watching small women with different tastes in clothing. Neely wore a multicolored skirt with leggings under it and a light pink sweatshirt that matched. While Ally looked as if she stepped out of a biker clothing catalog for kids. Sawyer had on jeans and a purple sweatshirt.

Ally looked up at Speed. “I’m gonna be a mechanic, so I can fix my own bike. They don’t wear girly stuff,” she declared.

“Yeah, yeah, I’m sure your momma will be pleased to hear that,” Speed replied sarcastically.

“No happier than Bailey was when she heard Neely wanted to be in the MMA,” Devil said.

I looked between the two of them and shook my head. “See. Whipped,” was all I said and laughed when they flipped me off from behind the girls so they wouldn’t see them.

“Alright, let’s get started,” Speed said, then moved to Ally. Devil moved to Neely, and I moved to stand in front of Sawyer.

“What do you want to be when you grow up, Sawyer? A doctor like your mom?” I found myself asking her. Before she had a chance to answer, Speed told the girls to turn around.

“Okay, you are going to pretend we are strangers and show us what you would do if we walked up behind you and grabbed you,” Speed explained and moved closer to Ally and placed a hand on her shoulder. Devil did the same with Neely.

When I moved closer to Sawyer and placed my hand on her shoulder, she chose that second to answer me.

“A cop,” she said matter-of-factly.

I grinned. The two seemed to share more than looks. Sawyer possessed the same quality her mother had when asked a question. Short and to the point answers. No explanation and nothing extra.

I opened my mouth to ask her why she wanted to be a cop, but the words never got a chance to cross my lips. Sawyer stomped on my foot and swung her arm back, her pointy little elbow making a direct hit to the groin. My brain registered the pain and I dropped to my knees, one hand on the ground to hold me up while the other went to the crotch of my pants. Stars flickered behind my eyes, and I groaned.

“Girls, that’s how you take down a Navy SEAL,” Devil said, his voice laced with humor.

I squeezed my eyes shut and promised myself I would kill him as soon as the nausea subsided.
