“I’ll call you back,” I say, hanging up.
Christ, I wasn’t expecting four years, that’s for sure. I’m left wondering how Jen will feel about it.
Ryan: Can you come to the media room?
Jen: Blowjob??
Fuck, the offer of a blowjob is tempting, but my mind is on other things right now.
I stand up, and head out into the corridor and toward the office space where I definitely would not be tempted by a blowjob. It’s quiet here, and I can hear Jen’s keyboard as she taps away. She has her earbuds in, but takes one out before I reach her desk.
“What are you listening to?” I ask, perching on Vicky’s empty desk.
“QOTSA,” she says, pressing stop on her phone. “You okay? You look troubled.”
“Just been in with the GM. We need to park the presentation for now. I need to speak to him next week.”
I don’t know why I don’t give her the entire picture, but I don’t. I guess I don’t want to think about it right now. I don’t want to give her the opportunity to back down and say she doesn’t want to come with me anymore; it’ll break my heart.
“Oh. Did he say why?”
“Not really,” I lie.
“That’s disappointing, but the presentation will keep.” She pauses before speaking again. “It’ll be fine. Trust me. It’ll all work out. If it’s meant to be—hey, want to see my progress?” She beckons me around to see her screen, and I grab Vicky’s chair. “Whatever you do, don’t adjust it. She will kill you.”
Jen presses a few buttons on her keyboard, and her screen changes; the number of times I’ve seen her on her computer, I always forget how much she does without a mouse.
“I feel like Faker when I do this,” she smiles.
“Who the fuck is Faker?”
“Like the Connor McDavid of eSports,” she shrugs. eSports? Since when is that a thing?
I put my full attention on the screen, and she flicks through several pages.
“It’s still a work in progress.” She’s put an image of me on the main page, sort of washed out but prominent. I’m impressed, and I can’t believe how quick she’s put this together.
“This is incredible!” I say.
“The goal is to create a mechanism for you to watch past games remotely. So, by creating a portal or something.”
She never fails to amaze me. Her eyes are fixed on her screen, and the more I look at her, the prouder I am, proud to call her my girlfriend. She’s loving what she’s doing here, and I already feel like a douche for asking to pull her away from it. My mind is back to my conversation with Johnny about the lifestyle. This whole thing is about to turn into a mess.
Chapter 31
Jenna
IcanseewhyTravis and Karina don’t do this often. The prep takes a bit of planning and precludes spontaneity, but this time it’s my idea.
I wrap a towel around me and leave the shower, drying off a bit before returning to my room.
Ryan is lying on the bed, his back against the headboard and doing a crossword. It’s become something of a routine for us, and we’re working on completing the book like a pair of oldies.
I drop the towel and walk over to the bed, and his eyes snap away from the crossword book, which he promptly tosses on the floor. He pulls me onto his lap, my boobs are pressed into his chest, and his hands run along the curve of my sides.
“You can’t stand there like that and expect me not to ravish you.” He kisses my neck, and I feel it all the way down to my toes.
“Ryan?”
