“Fluent in every language,” he answers, voice slurry.

“Why?”

“How am I gonna retire in a forest for peace and quiet if animals are yapping at me all day?”

Snowy cabin. Forest. I make a mental note to learn more. “I’d love to talk to animals.”

His glazed eyes open a little more.

We’re quiet for a few minutes while I concentrate on his foot and think of more questions. “I got one. Would you rather undo your deepest regret or live your wildest dreams?”

His foot tenses in my hand. “Undo my deepest regret.”

“Why?”

“Skip. You?”

I nod slowly. “Live my wildest dreams. Would you rather know the date of your death or the cause of your death?”

“Date.”

“Really?Causefor me, maybe I can do something to change it.”

He shrugs. “I don’t care how, just tell me when.”

The resignation in his voice makes me pause before I lift his foot to my lips and place a soft kiss on the ball. “Last questions. Ready?”

He nods, his fingers intertwined behind his head as his foot gets heavier in my hand.

I rotate his toes in a circular motion, pulling each one upward.

“Do you think about me at night?”

His eyes lower. “Yes.”

“I think of you too. Does it make you come?”

“Yes,” he replies, his voice deepening, before he nods for me to answer.

“Yeah, Blue.”

His foot twitches.

“Have you ever been in love?”

“No.” His eyes blink closed. “Yes.”

So, hehasdated. Did someone cause him to stop? I switch to his other foot as I take that in.

“Did he love you back?” I question.

“Skip.”

“You only have one more skip. Why were you out sick?”

“Skip.”

“Dangerous.” I click my tongue. “No more skips.”
