“How come when you say it, it makes absolute sense, but things get all jumbled in my head?”

“It’s easy to be the rational one when you’re not the person wrestling with doubts,” he says, patting my hand.

“True dat.” I stare at his chicken. “Want to switch plates?”

“Heavens, yes! Your roti looks insane.”

I chuckle as we trade.

“Fucking hell,” I moan when the first bite of chicken and yams hits my tongue. “Almost as good as your food,” I say after swallowing.

“Jerk maybe, but I have yet to make a roti this buttery and flaky.”

“Yours is pretty close.” I swallow another bite of food. “Just say the word, and I’ll invest in your restaurant.”

“Anything to get me out of being a firefighter, eh?” He laughs.

“You knock me for trying?”

“No, I guess I can’t,” he says, resting his palm over my hand.

After lunch, I hang with him back at the house for a few hours before I catch my flight back to LA.

I textSid when I’m in bed that night.

Me: Thanks for the flowers. It meant a lot.

I place my phone down as it buzzes. I expect a text, but he’s FaceTiming me.

I grin into the camera. “Hi.”

His handsome face smiles back. “How are you?”

“Alright. My Uncle Adam and I lost it so much we could’ve probably used an IV drip this morning. It’s always hard going there.”

“Damn. I wish I could’ve been there with you both. We had a game in Portland.”

I hate crying in front of other people, but for some reason, the idea of Sid being there doesn’t bother me. I think that says more about him than me.

“Hotel Monaco?”

He nods.

“Seriously, thanks for the note and the flowers. You didn’t have to.”

“Wish I could do more for you.”

I shake my head. “You do enough. I need to step my friendship up.”

“It’s not a competition. I’ve enjoyed getting to know you,” he says.

“I’ve enjoyed getting to know you too, the real you.”

He grins.

It still blows my mind that I can say anything to garner such a sexy smile from him.

“I didn’t have a chance to check the highlights. How was the game?” I ask.
