Oh my god!
My legs tremble as he kneels to one knee and presents a magnificent platinum ring with a brilliant oval diamond.
A wave of murmurs and gasps vibrates around the table.
“Tyler, I want to spend the rest of my life with you." He clears the emotion out of his throat. "You, whose beautiful soul is cast from love. I will strive every day to ensure that our family knows true joy, protection, and peace. Ours is an everlasting love forged only through life’s fires. Whatever storms may come to pass, we’ll bear them together and come out stronger. Our family will find refuge in our union. Because of you, I know that love is the greatest of mysteries, and true humility is accepting its breathtaking and unfailing path. I am already yours, but would you do me the honor of marrying me?”
I cover my mouth with my hand. The world reduces to a blur as all of the love in my heart for him pours out of me.
No, no, no.
I should be the one down on a knee asking for his hand. It’s him who would do me the honor of being his husband. His unfaltering love has held me together on days when I could barely muster the strength to get out of bed or feed myself. He’s loved me despite my fears and insecurities. He’s given me more joyful memories than I have any right to in a lifetime.
The light in his eyes dims. What’s wrong?
Our guests are suddenly so quiet that I’m about to look up to see if they’re still there when Sid asks, “No?” while blinking rapidly.
Oh, Christ! Did I say “no” out loud?
My hand drops from my mouth and reaches into my pocket for the ring.
“No, because it’s I who would be honored if you’d marry me.”
I hold up the ring and take a knee.
A loud wave of murmurs and gasps echoes around the table.
“Oh, thank God,” Sid mutters as his shoulders fall forward.
“Sidney David King, I know in my bones that—”
“Yes!” he exclaims.
“Yes?”
“Yes, of course, I’ll marry you!”
“Duh,” Kieran yells, and we burst out laughing as Sid hobbles the short distance and pulls me in for a kiss.
Our friends and family erupt with cheers, laughter, and applause.
Our kiss is wet and messy. "I love you so much,” I say, our foreheads touching. I wipe his tear-stained face.
“I love you more,” he says, wiping mine. He even wipes my snot like it’s not super gross.
I take his hand and slide the ring onto his finger. The sparkle from the diamonds against his gorgeous skin makes my heart ache.
His eyes go wide as he takes it in.
“You like it?”
“Like? It’s stunning. Like nothing I’ve seen before. I love it.”
He laughs when I look over at Kieran and wink.
“Give me your hand,” he says.
He slides the mesmerizing engagement ring onto my finger.
