Everything burns.
“My god, that worked. He’s awake! Ty, are you okay? It’s me, Lily.”
I groan. A sharp thumping, like someone’s trying to punch their way out of my head, has me leaning forward, clasping my temples.
“L-lily?” My throat is raw. I almost don’t believe what I’m seeing. If it wasn't for the scent of rose, pepper, and citrus filling the room, I wouldn’t believe that Sid’s mom is in my bedroom holding an ice bucket.
“Hi, dear. My Lord! What a scare you gave us. We were two minutes away from calling an ambulance. I’m on with your uncle and Sid,” she says, gesturing to the phone.
“W-what are you doing here?” I pluck my shirt away from my body, and ice cubes tumble out.
“We’ve been trying to reach you. Sid said that you were quite distressed when you called him yesterday.”
“Yesterday?”
How long have I been out?
“It’s Tuesday evening.”
I slept over eighteen hours?
“Yes, he’s okay. I’ll put you both on speaker,” Lily says into the phone.
I guess my text didn’t go through. Shit.
My face heats up despite being drenched in ice-cold water.
Sid and Adam speak simultaneously, and it’s a jumbled mix of the same question. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine…I’m sick and took cough syrup and sleeping pills. It knocked me…”
“That’s dangerous. You shouldn’t mix—Christ—how much did you take? What sleeping pills?” Sid’s freaked-out voice makes me flinch.
“I don’t know. The one Adam was prescribed. It’s fine, I—”
“Mom, he needs to go to the hospital. We have no way of knowing if the combination is lethal.”
“Ty, you were supposed to get rid of those pills. They’re too strong. They made me hallucinate,” Adam says.
“Mom, please.” Sid’s voice cracks.
“Love, hold on. I’m staring right at him. He’s okay. This isn’t that…”
I flash Lily a questioning stare.What isn’t this?
“Lily, could you check his pulse?” Adam asks.
“I’m fine. I was just in pain and needed to sleep,” I repeat, as Lily checks my pulse.
Why isn’t anyone listening to me?
Sid’s voice trembles, “Mom, listen to me, please, take him to the hospital. There’s still time to intervene.”
He sounds terrified. I don’t get why he’s freaking out. How long did it take for me to wake up?
“Please! I can’t lose him.”
I shrink, pulling the wet comforter up over my chest.
