After several moments of silence, he finally lets him drop, pressing a hand into the side of his neck.
Then his eyes are on me. When he moves his hand, I jump. The man only brings his finger to his lips, telling me to stay quiet.
He lifts his mask briefly, showing me his face.
I let out a sigh of relief.
Brian.
That means Chase is here. Nate is going to be okay.
Brian waves for me to follow him. I keep behind him, walking back around the building toward the door Jared led me out of. Before he can step forward, I pull on his arm.
He shoots me a look.
I hold up two fingers, pointing at the door, hoping he understands that there are two men inside the door.
He nods once, moving back toward the door. He pulls a gun from his back, attaching something on the end. He pauses outside the door before leaning in and whispering to me.
“Open it and tell them Jared sent you. That there’s a threat.”
I nod, stepping in front of him. I open the door, both men immediately pulling a gun on me.
“Jared asked me to come get you. He said there’s a threat. Told me to get inside and stay protected.”
They nod, pulling me in before the first one takes a step out.
The second one doesn’t even have time to react to his friend falling to the ground. Brian’s there, taking him out within a breath.
Grabbing my hand, he pulls me along with him. Once inside, I gesture toward the main area everyone was in when I was last in here.
He presses something in his ear, he whispers, “In position. I have the girl.”
I hear his grunts before I see him. Before me, Nate is positioned in the middle of the room. The men that were holding him before are still holding him up while another man slams his fists against him.
I gasp, clasping on to Brian’s arm. “Help him.”
Brian presses his ear again.
“Understood.” Brian turns to me. “Stay here, out of sight. We are moving in.”
I nod, watching as he moves silently around the room. Then everything happens at once.
Several men dressed in black filter into the room. Shots are fired as Nate falls to the ground. Unable to help myself, I rush forward, falling to the floor to crawl to him.
“Nate? Nate, are you okay?”
His arm shoots up, pushing me to my back on the floor. He pushes his body up over me.
“What the fuck, Hailee? Do you not hear the bullets flying?”
I reach up, cupping his cheek, unable to hold in my tears.
I really didn’t notice the bullets. I didn’t care. All I cared about was getting to him. Making sure he’s okay.
His eyes soften as he looks down at me. “I’m okay. Now stay still.”
His eyes scan the room, but he keeps his head low. His entire body is covering me as if he is acting like a shield.
