I don’t want to be here. I don’t want to be doing this, but I have to.
For the kids.
Before I get to the door, it opens. I knew he would be expecting me as soon as the guards waved me through the gate.
“What a pleasant surprise,” Bash calls out.
“We need to talk.”
He quirks his eyebrow. “It’s late. Could it not wait until tomorrow?”
“It can’t even wait five more minutes. I am going to kill Killian O’Reilly and you’re going to help me.”
I don’t think I’ve ever seen my brother react to a situation before. He is always so calm and reserved.
Not right now. His head jerks as his eyes widen briefly. In a split second, his cool and unaffected mask is back in place. He gestures me inside as he takes in my face.
“Let’s talk in the meeting room then, shall we?”
Dropping my purse next to the door, I follow him into the room. He takes out a device, sweeping the room. As soon as he is sure everything is clear, he comes to take a seat at the head of the table, next to where I am sitting.
“What happened?”
How can he be so calm?
My fingers tap on the table as I fidget in my seat.
“Greer. Did he hurt you? Your eyes are puffy. Have you been crying?”
Shaking my head, I take a deep breath. “I’m not here because he made me cry. You really think I’d ask you to kill him because he hurt my feelings?”
He shrugs. “I’d do it for you.”
“Why?”
“You’re my sister. I know we haven’t always gotten along, but you are a priority. I would kill him for you if you truly asked.”
Sighing, I tell him the truth. “I don’t want him dead, but if we don’t kill him, they will kill Alessa, Marcello, and Francesca.”
He sits up straighter. “Who are they?”
“I don’t know. Killian is working on it.”
“Why do they care if you kill him?”
This time my eyes well up with tears. “I think it’s time I come clean with you.”
I wait for him to say something. Anything, but he doesn’t. He sits stoically, as if he has all the time in the world. I shouldn’t have expected anything different. The mafia king is sitting in front of me. He knows the value of patience.
“Killian and I have been sleeping together since right after your wedding.”
His eyes flash in anger as his jaw clenches. “Excuse me?”
The next part comes out in a whisper as I let my head hang. “I’m in love with him.”
“Where the fuck has your guard been? How have I not known this? This should have been reported to me. Unless you have been sneaking out again.”
“Don’t blame Enzo. We have a deal. I wear a tracker and he allows me to have a small amount of freedom. It’s stupid and I know you’re upset but leave him alone. I have just forgiven you for Karrisa. I will not forgive you if you hurt Enzo.”
