“We are.”

“Over the last week and a half, I’ve been having a lot of dirty thoughts about you. More like daydreams, really. I conjure them up when I…” She lowered her voice, as though someone might overhear her confession. “Touch myself.”

My jaw dropped. “That’s the hottest fucking thing anyone’s ever said to me. Full disclosure, a few of my steamy shower sessions have involved thoughts of you, all naked and slippery.”

Her cheeks popped with her grin. “Really?”

I almost told her that she shouldn’t be so surprised, and that other guys had definitely thought about her during, too. But that only made me want to search and destroy, and to calm the toxic whorl of jealousy, I replayed her telling me that with me around, no other guy stood a chance.

I ripped open the condom, the raw desire shining in Ellie’s eyes as I rolled it on spurring me on. Then I looped my arm around her waist and pulled her flush against me. “Time to make all our dirty dreams a reality.”

Dude was knocking it out of the park with the sweet and sexy lines tonight. I’d meant the compliment about his tongue working magic, too, causedamn. My pussy still throbbed from being so thoroughly gratified, but as I took in his hard length, the ardent need for him to be deep inside of me shot into voracious territory.

Anticipation shivered up my core, and I rolled my hips, getting more of him on more of me.

Did I know what I was doing?

In the most technical of ways, yes. I was about to have sex with Luke, the guy who made me feel more comfortable being myself than I’d ever been—dressed or naked, on an adventure high in the air or chilling in my apartment eating empanadas. It’d been hard enough to resist him already, but seeing his beard, all foamy with whipped cream, and yeah, there’d been an indecent thought about it being coated with, well, me.

Then he’d sucked my finger into his mouth, and I’d nearly come right there on the spot.

After the way he’d completely unraveled me before putting me back together, my fears over never experiencing this level of intimacy with him far outweighed the dismal fact that we had an expiration date.

There was something tragically beautiful about ships passing in the night, forever sailing on opposite courses, and I held onto that as tightly as I held on to him.

Luke lowered his mouth to mine, swiping his tongue along the seam of my lips before prying them open and kissing me into a dizzy oblivion. I ran my hands up his sides, tracing the ridges of his muscles with my fingertips, enjoying the way they flexed and bunched beneath my touch.

Never before had I felt so powerful and happy at the same time. Being taken seriously usually required suppressing my bubbly side. But the way Luke pivoted my body, lowered me to the bed, and reverently raked his gaze over me, conveyed that he took me very seriously.

I sank back in the pillows and softness of the comforter as he climbed over me, the sublime weight of him pinning me against the mattress.

He swept the hair off my face, his fingertips grazing my cheekbone as the pad of his thumb swept across my lower lip. “You are the furthest thing from boring anyone could ever get. Every time we talk, whether it be text, a phone call, or my favorite—in person, where I can see your emotions flicker across your face—I find myself completely captivated by you. You inspire the sort of inner peace I’ve only ever experienced up in the mountains, the air so fresh and untouched by man it feels like another world entirely.”

“Aww.” I placed my hand on the side of his face. “I’m already D-T-F, dude. You don’t have to butter me up first,” I joked, and he smiled. I dug my thumb into the groove in his cheek, the way I’d longed to do since I first noticed it.

But then his expression grew serious. “You don’t have to throw up your shield, Ellie—it’s too late.”

My heart knotted, so tightly it forgot how to beat. Recalling my dating past led me to the realization that while guys had claimed to care, their actions didn’t often back that up. My friends, along with my mom and my siblings, often expressed their love, and that was life-giving. But no guy had ever uttered those words to me outside of the bedroom. It took way too long for me to notice they’d uttered those words get laid, not because they’d meant them.

“I see you,” Luke whispered, trailing kisses along the line of my jaw. “You’re smart and exude so much kindness and joy, it’s like trying to look at the sun, you’re so damn bright.” His lips brushed the shell of my ear, eliciting a pleasant shiver, and then he pulled back to look me in the eye. “Promise me you’ll never settle for anyone who doesn’t see the real you and appreciate how incredible you are.”

An odd thing to say right before sex, and yet it felt perfect. As though he were taking care of my future, even though he couldn’t be in it. “Only if you promise me that you’ll be careful on your big adventures,” I replied, my voice cracking at the end. “Don’t take unnecessary risks. I’m sure you’re going to find a lot of wiggle room in that ‘unnecessary’ part, but if you’re giving me advice to keep my heart safe, you have to take my advice to keep this body safe.” I ran my hand over his torso, up the center of his abdomen to where I rested my palm over his steadily beating heart.

“I’ll do my best.” He braced his forearms on either side of my head as he lowered his torso to meet mine. He kissed me on the mouth and positioned himself between my thighs. The swollen head of his cock nudged my sensitive, slick and ready flesh, and I sucked in a breath.

The impact of the moment caused a slow-motion effect, as though the two of us were marooned in the middle of the ocean and nothing else existed.

I cried out as he plunged inside, filling and stretching me in the most delicious of ways.

“God, you feel good,” Luke said, his voice low and husky.

“Mm-hm, same to you.” I readjusted, lifting my knees to settle him deeper, and our uniform moans filled the air.

As soon as Luke withdrew, my body mourned the loss until he returned to me again. Our tongues collided in a give and take dance that reminded me of the tango and, taking inspiration from our time spinning around the floor, I hooked my leg over his hip. He gripped my thigh and used his tight hold to spread me wider and plunge deeper, and a keening noise I’d never uttered before emerged from my throat.
