“What if Thomas is paying the price?” Trinity asked. “What if he has to suffer for the wish I made?”

“That’s not how it works. We know your heart, Trin. Yes, you may have made a wish because you were scared and shocked, but I don’t believe that lasted.”

“It didn’t,” Trinity said. “It wasn’t very long until I knew I wanted a baby. He knew I loved him, right? I wished to be a good mom. I wished for him to be healthy but at first...”

“Do you know what I wish?” Freya lowered herself to the edge of the bed. “I wish you could see yourself the way Beth and I do. You are strong and resilient. When we were kids, I used to wish for your personality. I thought if I could be as kind and happy as you that Mom would stay around. I wanted to be the easy daughter, but it wasn’t in my nature.”

She shook her head when Trinity would have argued. They both knew Freya told the truth. “You have so much love to give. I can’t tell you why certain things happen. Like why Beth doesn’t have a baby after trying for so long. Yet I have no doubt you are going to be an amazing mom, Trin.”

Trinity swallowed. “I will never make him doubt my love. No matter whether he’s easy or causes me endless pain, he will always know I love him.”

“He’s a lucky kid.”

The door opened, and a nurse wheeled in a bassinet as Beth and Christopher Greer followed. Freya felt her eyes widen, although Trinity didn’t seem surprised to see the man.

“What do you think, Greer?” Trinity asked, although her gaze stayed on her newborn son as the nurse placed him into her arms.

“He’s a handsome boy. Congratulations.”

Freya moved toward Greer. “It’s late. What are you doing here?”

“I went by the house earlier and saw Ash. He told me what had happened, and I thought I’d stop by and see if I could help in any way.”

“Since when do literary agents deliver babies?”

“We don’t. I was worried about Trinity.”

“She isn’t your concern.” The spiteful words shamed Freya even as she said them. Why did this man push every one of her buttons?

“Thank you for that reminder,” he said. “Are you doing okay?”

“I’m not your concern either.”

“He’s a handsome lad,” Greer said, looking over Freya’s shoulder. “A bit of an abrupt arrival, eh? Is everything okay with Trinity? Was there something specific that triggered—”

“We are not focusing on why it happened,” she said matter-of-factly. “We are focused on a healthy baby.”

“Of course,” he agreed. “I was just wondering...”

“Stop wondering.”

“Would you like to try feeding him?” Beth asked Trinity, who continued to stare in wonder at Thomas.

Freya darted a side glance at Greer.

“I’ll give you all some privacy,” he said immediately. “Congratulations, Trinity. If there’s anything you need, please reach out. I’ll get as much as I can done before you come home.”

“Thanks.” Trinity was already tugging at her hospital gown.

Greer turned for the door, like someone had just lit a fire under his tailored slacks.

Freya followed him into the hallway. “What is your angle?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I wanted to congratulate your sister and make sure she was doing okay.”

“There’s more to it. Something you aren’t telling me.”

“Suddenly you’re such an expert on my behavior?”
