“I’m happy to do it. What time are you going to get to his place?”
“I was supposed to pick him up at seven. It’ll be at least that before I get there.”
“Okay. I’ll plan to get there by seven, then I’ll be out of your hair.”
“Since we’re not going to the play, you could stay and hang out with us. We’ll probably just watch a movie and zone out.”
“No, this is your time together,” she told him. “I’ll just pop in, play food fairy godmother, then pop back out.”
“You sure? I don’t mind, and I know Shane wouldn’t.” His voice turned seductive. “Maybe we could hang out naked.”
She burst out laughing. “You’re such a pervert.”
“I know. That’s why you like me.”
“True,” she conceded, still laughing. “But no. I’m not going to crash your date, even if you’re naked.”
“Bummer,” Wyatt said with an exaggerated sigh, but she could hear the smile in his voice. “I was kind of hoping for a repeat of our threesome.”
“Well.” Veronica cleared her throat. “We’ll have to talk about that, won’t we?”
“I guess we will,” he replied, still amused.
“But not tonight.”
“Okay, then. I’ll text him and let him know the play is off, and dinner is handled.”
“Good idea. If he gets himself all cleaned up to go out then finds out he didn’t have to, he’ll crab about it for days.”
Wyatt’s laughter rang in her ear. “That’s our grumpy fucker. Thank you, Veronica. Really.”
“It’s nothing,” she began.
“It’s very much something, and it takes a lot of the pressure off tonight. Now we can just relax. So, thanks.”
“Anytime,” she told him, and she meant it. “I have to go, my lunch break is about over. I’ll see you tonight.”
“If I miss you tonight, save a kiss for me.”
“Always,” she quipped and hung up.
She gathered up her lunch debris and trooped back inside. She had a few more clients to see in the afternoon, and the accompanying paperwork to handle. But she’d be done before five, giving her plenty of time to skip home, change her clothes, and pick up dinner for her boyfriend and his boyfriend.
She shook her head and headed back to her desk. Four months ago, she was dating Derek and finishing up school to leap into a whole new career. Now she had her first job in that career, a new boyfriend who also had a boyfriend, and there was a distinct possibility of more threesomes in her future.
Life could be wonderfully, beautifully weird, she thought and went back to work.
Eighteen
Shane stepped out of the bedroom feeling mostly human. He’d slept for six hours straight, then spent an hour in the jetted tub soaking out the kinks from two nights on the hard ground. By the time he strolled into the kitchen, dressed in jeans and a Henley the color of raspberries, he was feeling almost human, and desperately hungry. He hadn’t gone grocery shopping in a week, so there was nothing in the fridge but a half pint of cream that he kept on hand for when Wyatt simply had to have a morning cup of coffee, a couple of very sad looking apples, and a container of the yogurt Veronica liked.
“Thank God Wyatt’s bringing food,” he muttered to himself.
He wandered into the living room, intending to stretch out on the couch and peruse the options for movies while he was waiting. He’d barely sat down and picked up the remote when the doorbell rang.
Assuming Wyatt had forgotten his key, he padded over to open the door.
When he saw Veronica, dressed in a flippy little skirt and a clingy tank top with a smile on her face, his heart sank.
