“Goodbye, Delia,” Veronica said with a laugh, then switched the call. “Wyatt?”
“Hey, beautiful,” Wyatt said. “Listen, have you talked to Shane today? I just tried to call him and he didn’t pick up, and I know he was driving back from Ionia this morning.”
“I talked to him a couple of hours ago,” Veronica said. “He was home, but he was really tired. He said he was going right to bed.”
“He probably put the phone on silent,” Wyatt sighed. “Okay, thanks.”
“No problem.” She frowned. He didn’t sound distressed, exactly, but he wasn’t happy. “Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, it’s fine. I was just going to talk to him about our plans for tonight. We have tickets to see a play, but this new schedule is kicking my ass. I was hoping to convince him to stay in.”
“Considering how hammered he sounded when I talked to him, I don’t think he’d have a problem with it.”
“The staying in part, no. Shane would stay in every night if I let him, you know?”
“I know,” she replied with a laugh.
“I was hoping to convince him to cook dinner. I’m going to have to head for his place right after work, and I won’t get there till after seven. And if he’s so tired he’s not answering the phone, there’s no way he’s going to be up for putting a meal together.”
“You could order takeout,” Veronica said. “There’s that Italian place he loves, Mama Luke’s?”
“That would be perfect, but they don’t do any kind of delivery, and it’s on the other side of town.”
“I’ll do it.”
“What?”
“I’ll do it,” she repeated. “Tell me what you want from Mama Luke’s, and I’ll pick it up and bring it over.”
“You don’t have to do that, V,” he began.
“I know, but I want to. Consider it a thank you.”
“For what?”
“For fixing me up with your boyfriend,” she said, grinning when he laughed. “And for being so sweet to me since I started dating him.”
“You know that’s no hardship for me, Veronica. I like you. And I like you with Shane. You’re good for him.”
“Aw.” She said it lightly, but she had to blink back tears. “See? So sweet.”
“If you’re sure...”
“I’m sure,” she said firmly. “I already know what Shane wants, one of those obnoxiously huge calzones. Do you want to split it with him, or get something else?”
“I love their Fettucine alfredo,” he told her. “With chicken. You’re sure this is okay?”
“Absolutely,” she told him. “What about a salad?”
“We can split one of their large Caesars,” he said. “How about I call in the order? I’ll put it on my credit card, and then you just have to play delivery girl.”
“No,” she told him firmly. “It’s my treat.”
“V,” he began.
“Wy,” she shot back. “Let me do this. Anything else? Breadsticks?”
“We don’t need breadsticks,” he said, but tone clearly said mmm, breadsticks, so she mentally added them to the list. “This is really great of you, Veronica.”
