I hand her the little jar, wrapped with some brown burlap ribbon and a sprig of pine, just for a cute touch.
“Oh my God! Did you make this?”
I nod.
“It’s adorable, what is it?”
I tell her all about my pine sap making in the woods and how it really helped with the bruises and the cuts we had. “Oh, and it worked on my zit! I tried it two days ago and look.” I tilt my face to show it’s completely gone. “It like, makes it come to the surface so fast that it goes away ten times faster. It’s a miracle and I put some extra oils and things to help with different ailments.”
“Wow, this is amazing.”
“It’s been a great stress reliever.”
She smiles and opens the lid. “What is that smell?”
“Well, pine is really strong, so I’ve been playing with scents that will not really mask it, but work with it in a way to make it less...harsh.”
“I love it. I’m totally going to use this!”
That makes me happy. I wanted to do something nice for Faye since Lord knows she does a lot for me. To know that she appreciates it really warms my heart. “I hope it works.”
“Only one way to find out.”
We keep looking at dresses, shaking my head at bad ones, laughing at the truly hideous ones, and really freaking hoping we find one that isn’t horrible.
She lifts another off the rack that is completely inappropriate. Worse than the last one. “Okay, I’m convinced you want me to look unprofessional. You realize this is a work dinner where I’ll meet the rest of the Knight family. The last thing I need to do is show up dressed like that.”
“Maybe the way into the business is to show up like that,” she says with a wiggle of her brows. “A little naughty time with the boss.”
“No.”
“I’m kidding. Okay, tell me more about this dinner so I can use my shopping superpowers.”
I fill her in on the details I have. It’s a fancy dinner party wherethere will be a lot of existing clients and potential ones. It’s at an opera house in Manhattan and I’m going to have to drive in and back that night because there’s no way I can afford a hotel for the night.
“Wait, you’re going to drive back? After a night of what I assume will be dancing and drinking?” Faye asks, her eyes wide.
“I can’t afford a hotel.”
“I’ll get you one.”
“No, you won’t,” I say firmly. “I don’t need you to when I can drive back.”
Faye sighs heavily. “And, how, pray tell, are you driving into the city?”
I haven’t worked that part out yet. My truck is about halfway done now, I need to give Donny another five hundred to finish the rest. I was able to convince him to drop the price a lot on the fact that I babysat for him.
“I’m not sure.”
She smirks. “No shit, because your hooptie of a truck is dead.”
“I’ll figure it out.”
“Just ask Rowan,” she says while going back to looking at the rack.
“I’m not asking Rowan to drive me into the city.”
Her gaze meets mine. “Why not? You two seem to be in a much nicer place since the ice storm debacle. He’s going, right?”
